BEEMAN’S BLOG – SEASON 2, EPISODE 11
"POWERLESS"
WARNING SPOILERS ARE CONTAINED WITHIN
Sorry for getting the blog up a little late this week.
Sadly, here at the HEROES offices we’ve dropped below a skeleton crew to a nobody crew, and I got stuck doing all the computer uploading, research and spell/fact checking alone. If there are more mispellings and fact mistakes than usual, forgive me!
So… Tonight our eleventh episode aired. It was written by Jeph Loeb and directed by Allan Arkush, both of who did their usual outstanding job! And I hope you all agree it is a fitting end to this segment of the season.
This time I thought I would do something a little different. I’ve been meaning to interview our composers Wendy Melovin and Lisa Coleman since way back since last season. I’ve actually tried to do it several times, but our schedules have been notoriously out of sync with each other. Now we finally hooked up.
The music of HEROES is I think, one of its most important elements. It is moody and ethereal and both unsettling and uplifting all at once. The instrumentation and orchestration are highly unusual. There’s also a lot of it. Two or three weeks before the show is on the air, we have a spotting session, where the producers Wendy and Lisa go through the picture and specify where we want music and what emotional effect we want out of the music. At the end of those sessions we always joke, saying, “well, this time there were only five music cues. All of act one. All of act two. All of act 3. All of Act 4 and all of act 5." By the way, that’s A LOT. Thirty to thirty five minutes of a forty-two minute show. I’d guess that’s maybe double an average TV show. And Wendy and Lisa will then have, frequently, less than a week to compose and record all of it.
I met them in their studio which is a unique and funky place in Hollywood, they call the “tree house” It’s a low ceilinged space, up a winding flight of steps, that is both cozy and crammed with so many instruments, mixing boards and hard drives that you can hardly believe it fits. They gave me a cup of coffee and we got started...
GREG BEEMAN: So, first of all, how long have you two known each other.
WENDY: Oh. Since we were two.
GB: Really? You’re kidding?
LISA: Our Dad’s were both studio musicians in Los Angeles. They knew each other and played together. They actually were in this same building for many years.
W: The A & M building. Our first band together was when we were 7. It was called “The Waldorf Salad”
L: Which isn’t a name we picked. Our parents picked because at that time we all went to a Waldorf School, Highland Hall, here in L.A.
W: The first real band we had – the first time we made money we were about 11 with my brother and sister.
GB: Cool. I’m so sorry I’m no naïve. Is this all common knowledge?
W: For Wendy and Lisa fans, yeah. But not to the general public.
GB: Okay great. And so, when did you hook up with Prince?
L: I joined Prince’s band in ’78 or ’79. He was looking for a female keyboard player. A friend of mine brought him to see me and I ended up joining his band.
GB: And you went to Minnesota?
L: Yes, where it is SO cold.
GB: How about Wendy?
L: She was visiting me in Minneapolis, and there was a sound check.
W: There was another musician who, well, lets say, was having a bad day and didn’t show up for sound check.
L: I suggested that Wendy play for the sound check, and so she sound checked with the band and she just shredded it. Prince was blown away.
GB: And the rest was history.
W: The rest was history.
GB: Okay, so how and when did the transition to music for movies and television happen.
W: Always. We always had an interest in it. It just seemed natural. Lisa father was an experimental musician, who worked on many films and art projects.
L: And Wendy’s father was a top piano player who played on many soundtracks, especially with Jerry Goldsmith as well as other composers.
W: It was a natural progression. Even before Prince, we always wanted to do music for film. We used to listen to records of soundtracks and read the score.
L: I was a total geek. Not cool at all. It was always a culture shock for me to be in the pop world.
GB: So what was the path that led to doing your own scores?
W: A movie called TOYS was our first opportunity. We did a title sequence for Hans Zimmer. And then Trevor Horn. And then Mark Isham, and he handed a movie over to us, which was the movie DANGEROUS MINDS with Michelle Phieffer, our big break.
L: Which, of course, mostly led to us doing a lot of low budget urban movies.
W: We started doing a lot of bad movies. Bad TV pilots.
L: Some were good. Some you don’t even want to mention.
W: And then we met Allan Arkush.
GB: That was a big turning point?
W: That was everything. That changed everything.
GB: What happened.
L: He called us up. He knew our work and he wanted to meet us. He was doing a David Kelley TV show called “SNOOPS” and he said they wanted it to be a little more rock and roll, a little offbeat.
W: We heard what it was about, and we were like, “I don’t know.” We weren’t sure we were interested.
L: But we went to Allan’s office to meet him. And Allan knows EVERYTHING about music. Everything about our Dads. Everything. More than we ever knew.
W: And there on his wall was a picture, of my brother, who had died a few years before. Allan had directed a movie called GET CRAZY, and my brother had worked on it. And there was this picture of Allan and my brother, who had passed away, and Allan didn’t even know it, but right then we knew, “this is fate.”
L: And we’ve done everything with Allan ever since then.
W: 150 hours of music later. And it has changed everything.
GB: And it all led to HEROES…
W: And HEROES changed everything again.
GB: Why?
W: Because it’s a true artistic endeavor. Every week. A lot of times with music for television, what your asked to do, it’s like bad porn.
GB: What does that mean?
W: You have almost no screen time to make any statement, to build any character. You don’t own any of the black, meaning the time when the act ends and it goes to black for a few seconds before commercial, and so you’re supposed to just jam home whatever the main emotion it is they’re going for. Nothing is contrapuntal. Nothing is subtle.
L: It’s so uninspired and uninspiring. With most TV it’s a job, a craft, not an art. You have short scenes and the music cues are so short. And network executives get scared whenever you DO experiment, so it’s frustrating.
GB: For instance?
W: Well, a small example, on CROSSING JORDAN, which was a good show and good musically, but originally Jordan’s character was supposed to be Irish. So we tended to play this up with a lot of Irish instruments and instrumentation. And sure enough the note comes down, “Can we back off the Irish stuff a bit.”
L: TV in general wants to hit every demographic, to appeal to the broadest audience possible. So, in doing that, the music tends to become generic. You can’t be hot or cold, you have to be lukewarm. If it’s funny, it’s a rim shot. If it’s sad it’s strings. If it’s exciting, it’s drums, and so on.
W: When it came to HEROES, We had done one cue for the pilot that was very dreamy. And another, exciting cue for an action scene. And Tim Kring came in to see what we were doing, and he said “Hey, let’s try the dreamy cue under the action scene.” And that became the cue under for Claire, when the trains on fire. Which has become a signature piece of music for the show.
L: And that was huge. When Tim said, “Let’s play the dreamy cue under the action scene,” it changed everything. It focused our minds on what this show could be and how it could be different.
GB: Did Tim talk a lot about what he wanted the music to be at the pilot stage?
W: He talked in a general way. He talked about the emotions and the directions of the characters. He gave us the idea he wanted to be incredibly unusual musically. And he definitely gave us the idea that we could have a lot of freedom and that we could really experiment.
L: He talked a lot about about subtext also. In HEROES every scene has MASSIVE subtext. The music is making the viewer unconsciously listen in a way that makes them believe there is more going on than what you see.
W: We have to work the same way you and Allan direct. We ask ourselves, “How are we going to tell this story and get from point “a” to point “b” emotionally?” What was Allan telling us, that in this 11th episode he had a scene in the vault that was two pages, but that it was so dense, it took 65 setups to tell the story? Well, that’s how the music is too. There are A LOT of layers, there’s A LOT going on in the music.
L: For instance, in the scenes between HRG and Claire, on the surface you may have a scene where the father is taking the daughter to school. On the surface it’s mundane. But there are layers and layers in that relationship. Layers of deceit. Layers of lies. Layers of mistrust. Layers of loyalty. And, also, always, and very strongly, layers of love. Well, all those things have to be told musically.
W: We do it the same way you guys shoot it. When you do a big swooping crane in, we have to support it. And... What’s that lens that you always use? The one Allan used so much in this episode, so that HRG’s glasses are in focus at the same time Bob is in focus.
GB: The swing and tilt lenses?
W: Yeah. Well, we have to do that too. We have to tell two or more very different stories, at the same time with the music.
L: Themes of intention. Themes of subtext. Themes of implication.
GB: That’s interesting, because I find in my own work, these days, and now that I’ve matured and hopefully gotten better, that I do A LOT of very complicated things with the camera and the blocking, all to support the emotion of a scene. But, when it’s all put together, it’s all very subtle. It isn’t really noticed. I experience the music on this show the same way. It affects you, and it moves you, actually very strongly, spiritually really... but you don’t notice it doing so. Maybe your work is like mine, it’s best when it’s not calling attention to itself.
W: If you study it, it’s much more complex than it seems. On the surface, much of the time it’s pastoral. But if you break it down, if, for instance, every piece of music was a color, if you broke it down and looked at it, you couldn’t tell what color was the main one, there are so many.
GB: Well the music works, everyone loves it. I actually don’t think you ever get network notes. Do you?
W: No. Allen and you give notes in the spotting session. Tim always has notes. There are notes from Tim and Dennis and Allan at the playback, and we still shift cues around. But, no, I think this is the first time in fifteen years that we really don’t get any network notes.
GB: Whose actually playing? Do you bring in musicians?
W: Just the two of us play everything.
L: It’s where the classical training comes in. We can play everything. And we’ve been building, and spending a lot of money of building up our music and sound effects library for this show.
(At this point I look around. Damn. There are a lot of hard drives here.)
W: We have 3 huge Intel Macs, we have a hard raid system, and we have so much information.
L: We need a lot. There are 30 to 35 minutes of music per show, which is unheard of in TV.
W: And we do not re-use music. I know it seems like we can or should. But when you get into these scenes, you can’t. There is always some new element or layer that makes it not possible to re-use an old cue.
L: We have our legends. What music goes with what character?
GB: What are some examples.
L: Mohinder gets a signature piano sound, which is now used at the end of the show.
W: There are actually four completely different pianos that we use in the show.
L: Mohinder's is a Bulgarian piano. We play it super compressed, like it’s coming out of a faraway radio – that’s because he’s so analytical, he’s always trying to figure it out, trying to dial it in.
W: Peter is marcato strings.
GB: What’s “marcato?”
W: It’s just an instruction to the musician of how to play the instrument. Marcato indicates to make quick, strong jabs with the bow. It felt right to play his character that way, like, “I’m going to be a hero now.”
L: Hiro is always marimbas and bassoons, always staccato to emulate a clock, like time, controlling time.
GB: I also hear a lot of, what sounds like wind, like controlled noise, wind moving through pipes.
W: We do a lot of wind, it’s true.
GB: It adds tension.
L: We have a lot of different wind. We used to do a really cool thing with the character of Claude, which was wind mixed with voices. It felt like there was a ghost in the room. There are also a lot of drones and chants that we mix into a lot of the music. This is because Mohinder, the narrator, is Indian.
W: Whenever Niki is being possessed by Jessica, there’s a piece we use that uses Indian voices chanting, which gives the scene a feeling of her being possessed. There’s a possession when she’s in the middle of a violent act she’s not in control of. So we use incantations to underscore this.
L: With Matt, when he's reading minds, we play voices, chanting voices, backwards, because it seems to us, that's his experience, he's drawing thoughts out of people's minds, so those thoughts would travel backwards.
GB: Wow. Which of your father’s was an experimental musician. It sounds like it’s served you well.
L: Mine was. And yes it has. Although now I call it, a “sound artist.”
GB: Okay, tell me about Shenkar. He gets his name in the credits next to your composer credit.
W: Well, he is probably most famous for being the vocalist in Peter Gabriel’s score for “The Last Temptation of Christ.” And also for “The Passion of the Christ.” And, as I said, Tim gave us the idea that we could do ANYTHING on this project. So we approached Shenkar and asked him if he’s like to be the guiding voice for the heroes on their quest. To me he IS the voice of HEROES. Years from now, whenever they parody the show on MAD TV or SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE or whatever, I’m sure they will parody him, because he is the voice of the show.
GB: What is his nationality?
W: He’s Indian. But he’s here in L.A. a lot. Here and there. He’s a very mysterious guy.
L: And he never lets you see him sing.
GB: Huh? How does that work?
L: I write down some instructions of what we’re looking for, and lay down three or four minutes of a drone in “D” and also in “E” and “A” and he literally comes in, in the middle of the night, when nobodies here and lays down his voice over the drone.
GB: That’s crazy.
W: That’s Shenkar. He's our mysterious little goblin.
L: We originally just wanted everything he did long and smooth and legato. Lately I’ve been wanting him to come in again and do some quicker pieces.
GB: Okay, last thing. Tell me about Allan Arkush who directed tonight’s episode
W: he is the most musical person I’ve ever worked with, even in the music business. He knows exactly what he wants.
L: His notes are SO specific. To the frame what he wants and to the instrumentation that he wants.
W: And he never forgets a note. If he says something at the spotting and weeks later at the playback, you didn’t do it. Allan remembers.
L: Allan is the best. We really are so connected to him now. It's a great relationship.
GB: Wow, That’s great. Thank you so much. Maybe now the fans will be able to listen more carefully to the amazingly deep music you guys write for this show.
And that’s it!
Fans, I wish I could tell you what's happenin g, but I truly do not know what the future holds. None of us in Hollywood knows when the strike will be over, or if when and how many more episodes of HEROES will happen this year.
But no matter what, we WILL be back, serving you to the best of our abilities, as soon as we can.
As for this blog – it will go dark now – until the show is back on the air. Thank you all for this opportunity. This blog is half like a term paper I have to write every week, and half an incredible opportunity to become more directly linked to you guys… Our fans who are our life’s blood. It's become a very special experience for me to put it out there for you every week.

We also require more of David Anders. ;)
Second of all I love heroes just as much as I did from the very first episode. I would love it more if Nathan was ok and if Niki didn't die. Please say they will be ok? I hope so, I'll definitely miss them.
Any chance of more Caitlin? That's the person I want back most of all. Her story needs to be ressolved and not by just having her stuck in the future or killed off. I'm ignoring the haters because she has great potential and promise, even more so when she's with Peter.
My interest in heroes has never once dipped, dived or been lost to the show but if she doesn't come back in the show then I would have to admit it would. The masses might not want or like her for whatever reason but it's not about the numbers and pleasing the most; it's what makes sense and is the right thing to do and she makes since. She is the right thing to do.
Laters.
Take your time to do Volume 3. We rather wait a lil longer and be much more satisfied with the end product. But not too looong though. =)) Saying on behalf of all fans!!! (I think) =DD
Volume 2 was great! Yatta people!
Dudes, if opening scene of Vol3 is Nathan in a coffin while that Irish Chick with the lousy accent still lives to talk... you are going to have a very angry fanmob.
Love heroes. Really, really do. Most agree Season 2 sucked. As many others have said you have written yourselves into a corner with how powerful you have made Peter and have to reduce him to a moron to progress the story the way you want it. One *almost* unforgivable example: Peter NEVER tried to read Adam's mind??? *Sigh* Anyway, there is a simple fix - have Peter's powers have a time limit and drain away if not occasionally re-exposed to their source. Problem solved. No more fans pointing out GLARING plot holes on which powers he conveniently forgot to use.
Adam: "Peter, can't you just teleport us into the vault?"
Peter: "It doesn't work that way. These powers don't come with an instruction book, Adam. I don't even know what all I can do and the powers I do know I have, I have to learn how to use. It takes time".
See. It's not that hard to cover those pesky plot holes.

But what about poor Nathan and Niki, they can't die.
Aside from that I loved the finale, specially when Sylar killed Maya... only to her back to life... I just cringe every time I think about this... She's just annoying, because her character is under developed and there was not much of a storyline for her to begin with.
Love to see Sylar back, but there has to be some kind of consequences to his stealing powers, like for example, his not being able to hold on to such powers for an extended period of time? That way we could justify his never ending need for new abilities...
Hiro and his decision to bury Adam was eerie indeed, but now we see how he starts to become "Future Hiro", just give Ando more screentime, please?
Anyways, I can't wait for Volume III and see how Villains will keep me wanting for more, but please, please, pretty please bring Nathan back.
Save the Congressman, Save the World!!
Saved Nathan, save the show.
^ I agree! Please please PLEASE don't let Nathan die! :(
All of that aside, Heroes is sooo awesome and I love these behind-the-scenes pictures. ^^
~Sam
That can be fixed they can bring him back and quit killing him off.
Nathan must live. I want Nathan to be the Petrelli in the front instead of Peter in the next volume.
Nathan/Peter/Claire need to take out The Company. Peter and Claire can't do it alone. Peter needs Nathan there to make sure he doesn't do anything stupid.
I rule a Brazilian website about Heroes, and we all (kind of everyone there) want Ali Larter back, in any of her personalities! \o/
Jessica and Nathan are my favorities characters, and the actors are the most beautiful (and hot and grown-up) ones too, so Heroes would not be the same without them. A lot of people would probably stop watching... I think I would.
Well, thanks for the blog, I love it, specially the funny pictures. :)

In other words, those were not fatal shots. There are great margins between the shot and the heart. Not to mention the shot was taken from a distance as opposed to Matt Parkman's 4 point-blank bullet shots from Sylar.
Why are you hesitating about keeping the character alive? He's one the best on Heroes!! What Peter can do withput Nathan? What our, their most loyal fans do withput Nathan on the next season?
Please!!
SAVE THE POLITICIAN, SAVE THE WORLD!!
Do you want to continue making Heroes? Then start listening to what the fans are saying. No fans=no show.As simple as that.
...as great of a hero and character that peter is, his actions will always be second guessed by fans... "he should have used that power instead"... and with good reason. and since he met sylar he should be able to do everything slyar can... super hearing, the ability to 'fix' things that are broken, ect.
as much as i love Milo, he may need to go for the sake of the show
on another note...Sylar lives!!! Sylar should become the leader of the company :)
(I'm sorry, the previous post are empty so i've delete it :()
Saludos, *StEfY* desde España!!
....scuzzi ma non parlo inglese...
and the Fights scenes so long waited for everyone in this show were disgustting...
And, please DO NOT KILL NATHAN, not without a proper reason at least... join your writters and do not "charge pages wiht fool content" make and write "the purpose" the characters are alive, the only thing dead in this show are the storylines around the characters all of then meanless without a north...
the tag... the pich, the idea are incredibles do not waste it...
XOXOXOXOXO
Nathan Petrelli
well, talking about the finale of the volume, i didn't like it very much... it was strange (nathan murdered?) and predictable (sylar comes back). But it's ok if the next volume it's like the first!
congrats!
I love Heroes very much, I love the characters and how you delineate them in the first season. I don't dislike the second one, even if there are some character (read: Maya, Caitlin) that I couldn't understand why you put in (and why you let Maya live, she is so moron!)
But, in the end, I saw the last episode of the second series and I ask "WHY?".
Peter, which is my favourite character, acts like a stupid all the time (He forgot his power? READ IN ADAM'S MIND!), Claire lost every charm (in the second she became very, very boring) and Hiro lost all his cheerfulness that made him one of the best character.
But is ok, I like that season the same, there were good things like Elle (that is fantastic) and Adam (I want to thanks Heroes to create him!) but in the end what made me so incredulous was the death of Nathan. Yes, THAT.
Nathan is one of the best characters, he act after had think and also Nathan is what let PETER live, how you can split them? Petrelli bros are the favourite group of the show (not that the other aren’t love but… OH COME ON! They are the Petrelli! They saved the world TWICE! And they are so lovely…) and, also, he’s Claire father. Claire that I hope returns how she was in the first season, Claire that has lost HRG, THAT Claire. The one that need both Peter and Nathan to be happy. And Hiro, and the only scene that I love with him, the “FLYING MAN!” that reminds me the first season.
And there is also Matt, obviously, that became friend with Nathan… Nathan is the glue that stays in all the relation of the characters.
How can you let him die? Not me but all the fans are saying you that: if Nathan disappear the show will lost more than fans (that, we know, is the heart of a show) but also all his sense.
Heroes without Nathan… No, Heroes without the Petrelli is not the Heroes that we love.
is this simple: you kill nathan, i'll stop watching this show... and I LOVE THIS SHOW, i BREATH this show... Just.. what were you thinking?!! I feel like I lost a limb! What kind of message is "Save the world twice & you're gonna get shot!"??
Is this simple: you kill nathan, i'll stop watching this show... and I LOVE THIS SHOW, i BREATH this show... Just.. what were you thinking?!! I feel like I lost a limb! What kind of message is "Save the world twice & you're gonna get shot!"??
Personally, the writing in Heroes this season has been disappointing. There's an over-reliance on death and shock ending instead of solid, interesting action/character interaction. The show also spent too much time on repeating the same thing over and over again. Maya/Alejandro and Claire/West comes to mind.
Most of all, the addition of the new characters has done nothing but messed up the dynamic of the series. Most of them have little to no relevance to the plot at hand. And now you're going to kill characters who actually have relevance to the plot to accomodate them? I'd say "Good luck" and be ready for the incoming slaughter. If "Heroes" is at the height of its popularity, I believe it might be able to survive the slaughter. But at this stage......
No worries.
http://tv.ign.com/articles/840/840147p1.html
and please leave Nathan dead. this whole regenerative blood business will really leave deaths to feel like nothing cause ANYONE can come back. and since you've all done that I feel a death coming for Adam and Claire and Peter like with Santiago who's character couldn't stay cause he would keep predicting.
SAVE NATHAN PETRELLI, SAVE THE WORLD!!!!!!
But I really want to thank you for this blog, it's great to take time to write all these behind the scenes stuff for us fans to enjoy. Thank you! :)
Nathan wasn't even dead in the first place. My grandfather was shot 3 times on his chest during WW2 and he still survives up to this day. I think someone else has pointed out that the shots missed Nathan's heart. It's not out of the question that he can survive normally without even using the blood. There are also other ways to bring him back without using the blood. If Peter doesn't use it, he'd look stupid/useless again.
Then he's only missing from his family for ONE DAY! Come on... That was the stupidest thing in Volume 2.
WHY WHY WHY???!!! How could my favourite character be shot a couple of times and be yet again, in the crisis on whether he is coming back for the next season. That sucks. Do you guys have something against Adrian that much? Nathan is hot, he loves Peter (who otherwise would have wiped up the whole by now). Can't maya stay dead and someone kill that emo flying boy if you guys only want one flyinh character?
On another note, I love your blog and your updates and I hope the writer strike gets resolved soon. Otherwise you can just contact me and I'll be happy to write and finish volume 3 for you.
I know, Blasphemy!
1. both were infected, but other than that, not too attached to the main story arc
2. but still, both struggled for something: he wanted his powers back and she wanted a normal life.
Another link between them is the fact of Mohinder making the cure for her and Sylar ended up using it.
If Sylar is going to be that repetitive character, there is no reason for Nikki not to reappear, other than the actress bailing out.
The fans will be loyal, of course, as per usual. But judging from the comments here, it's also clear that their loyalty will vanish immediately once they find out that the cliffhanger characters are not returning. At any rate, I decide to join the non-fans and bail out earlier because the show has been nothing but a train wreck so far.
For the fans, you really have nothing to gain by staying around this wreck of a show. Supposing that your favorite character survives this massacre, how long would it be before they have to face another one? This is not a show which rewards its viewers' loyalty. It's a show that claims "story is king" even though the story itself is nothing but one big mess filled with plot holes and inconsistencies.
Similarly, the strengths of this show are few of the show's characters. The writers, however, keep wasting them away. Take Eden, for instance, there are still many storyline in store for her but the writers just kill her for the sake of killing her/to create shock value. Well, history about to repeat itself with Nathan and Niki. Personally, there are so many things these two can still do. Hell, even the chemistry between the two would be interesting to see.
I LOVE NIKI/JESSICA!!!
Please, don´t kill off her!!!
Ali Larter Forever!!!
She is my favorite character!!!
She is amazing!
She is mysterious woman!
She is the best character in the show!!
Just noticed Bob's password to the video surveillance system was "Midas". I've been wondering how the Company is funded...think Bob can turn base metal into gold?
He can. It's his power. He showed Mohinder in one episode.

Let the writers do what they want, its their story, and if your a real heroes fan, you wouldn't moan and leave just because one or two characters were killed off.
In my opinion, one of the biggest mistakes was shooting Nathan. You can´t let him die after all he went through. His way to redemption was fascinating and I don´t think it´s over by finding Peter and be sacrificed. Again.
Why is it Nathan who is in danger again? Didn´t we suffer enough to wait whole summer if he survives or not? If you were planning to kill him, wouldn´t be better to let him die in the end of S1?
I think Nathan is a real hero. He saved the world twice by saving Peter. I thought that you probably know what you are doing but then I saw that you are actually thinking about writing him off the show!
That is very, very bad idea. What this season missed was the chemistry between the original characters. Matt and Nathan was a great idea and the episode Flight or Fight is one of my favorites. Maybe because the first episodes were weaker and Nathan and Matt made it interesting. And that´s my point. Even in the little time Adrian Pasdar got this year, he made his Nathan interesting and he had chemistry with every actor there.
I think that Nathan was one of the few characters who had some goal, and did something useful and reasonable.
The Petrelli Brothers were missed in S2. When Peter and Nathan reunited in the last episode, it was so wonderful and the episode became better.
Petrellis are the core of the show. You can´t have Peter without Nathan and Nathan without Peter, because it just doesn´t work.
Nathan is the one who keeps Peter in line and helps him. And Nathan is obviously lost without his younger brother, too. Someone might suggest that killing of Nathan will make Peter interesting, revengful and all, but it could work only in a few following episodes. Eventually, you will have to end it and let Peter become evil or make him lose his abilities. And, honestly, I don´t want Heroes to become "All about Peter". I don´t think he can exist without Nathan. Didn´t you write into Season One that there is a bond between them? Why ruin it? Wouldn´t be better to explore it?
Then there is Claire. What is the point of making her Nathan´s daughter when everything what we have seen from their relationship this season was one phone-call?
If you are gonna kill off Nathan, then half of the story in S1 will turn pointless.
And, Nathan from all people has THE RIGHT to use Claire´s blood. I am sure she would like to help him because she is his daughter after all. His own daughter.
I also think Nathan is a perfect candidate for future „leader“ of Heroes. He accepted his gift in this season, he tried to find the truth, actually did something senseful while the others did illogical things. He is decisive, smart, he can talk to people and can organize them. That is another unique ability you can use for future storylines. I think your idea about group of „bad guys“ is awesome but you need someone who will lead the „good guys“. I can´t imagine anyone better than Nathan. He is perfect for the job.
While some characters are not interesting at all (Maya, Monica, Micah), the one who started an interesting storyline should be writen off the show?
Tim Kring apologized to fans for mistakes he thinks you guys have done. Don´t make another huge mistake by writing off Nathan. If I can ask you, pay attention to comments in various sites and forums.
You will see that most of people don´t want Nathan to die there. And I am not talking only about internet but also people I know outside internet, who are watching Heroes.
I saw lots of people saying that they will stop watching. I wouldn´t go that far because I love the show. I would keep watching but without Nathan, Heroes will never be the same.
And I believe that those people say it just because they are angry.
All I know is that when Nathan wasn ´t in two episodes, I missed him. I missed him so much that I wasn´t able to enjoy the episodes too much. If this should happen after he is gone...then yeah, I would probably quit. I can´t say it for sure until I try. And I still believe that you have some plan for Nathan. But if the worst should happen and you would decide to do this, I would keep watching. This is voice of one viewer, even non-US who has no influence to ratings or watching commercials. But I am sure I am not the only one who feels it that way.
With Nathan AND Nikki gone, I think lots of people wouldn´t feel like that it´s *their* heroes any more.
Heroes is as a comics concept, isn´t it? Then keep characters, or revive them (and Nathan wasn´t dead, just injured) shoudln´t be such problem in comics.
Thank you for writing this blog and thank you for Heroes. I am sad and angry but I thank you because you are still doing good job.
Lenka
If the show is very good, I wouldn't have just watch it for the characters. Unfortunately, the show is not even that good. The characters are what makes the show. When you take that away, the show is just a shell of its former self. What is lame is someone who defends the show regardless of its failure/flaws.
>>> I watch it because it is brilliant,
YMMV. But in case you haven't noticed, the show has been criticised by fans and reviewers alike. Normally it's just one or the other but when both reviewers and fans agree on one thing, then usually it's because the show really does need to be fixed.
>>> if your a real heroes fan, you wouldn't moan and leave just because one or two characters were killed off.
A real fan won't just parrot and agree whatever outlandish and bad plotting that the writers have in plan. No one said that we have to worship the show regardless bad story. IF we don't like where its heading, we have the right to speak about it. This show wouldn't be where it is now without the support of the loyal fans who have watched it right from the start. A show which can't respect its fans is a show which I am no longer wish to be a part of.

There are many good sci-fi series these days. Many anime series can produce complex, interesting stories which intrigue the viewers and develop the characters. I wish Heroes could be like that but I've been nothing but disappointed over and over again. Instead of character development, characters are put on the back-burner and then killed when the writers need something shocking for the finale.
I don't think I can say the same thing for the presence of Maya, West and Caitlin. Those three inspire death chants whenever they appear.
So you know who to save Mr.Beeman.

I'm also interested to see Nathan becoming the leader of the special people. Maybe they can form an underground movement against the company. That would certainly be interesting and take the show to a new direction.
If you are gonna kill off Nathan, then half of the story in S1 will turn pointless.
And, Nathan from all people has THE RIGHT to use Claire´s blood. I am sure she would like to help him because she is his daughter after all. His own daughter."
Plus Claire made it clear (pun not intended) that she's not averse to letting her blood be used by Bob for such purposes... that's one of the things I hope we get in season three, Claire put to better use than she was this time around.
And now, a question about the actual post - is there a chance that Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman will have some of their music for the show released in the near future? (Even a suite on a song album a la Crossing Jordan would be okay, but a score CD like the ones for 24, Lost, Alias and even Prison Break would be ideal.)
On the other hand, I agree that there are still potential in Nathan as far as storyline goes. Plus, the company would look dumb if they actually shot Nathan to kill instead to incapacitate him.
If Nathan is dead, Peter would just become a bigger, loser canon (one with too many power). Why would they kill someone who barely able to defend himself and let the guy with 12 powers or more alive and able to blab it all to the press?
There's nothing to stop Peter from going public if his most important person is dead. But if Nathan is alive, Peter would think twice before exposing the company again for fear that he'd endanger Nathan's life once more.
I am a graphic design student(Master year) and for my endproject I am doing a paper about opening credits in tv and film.
I wanna know who or which company made the opening credits for Heroes?
I hope you read this message, because I couldn't find it on the internet.
Best Regards
Ellen Andries

good luck for volume 3 guys! we support Heroes all the way!!!
Except it did. I'm freaking out in a huge way. XD It looks like an entire season of 5YG, and that is awesome.
What people need to remember is that we're only halfway through the season. Of course there are things that aren't going to be tied up, yet. Plus, when these episodes were written, there was no writer's strike to worry about, and, I'm assuming, it was expected that V3 would pick up relatively soon after V2 ended. So I seriously doubt the intention was ever to string us along.
Keep him dead. You've brought him back once, along with Parkman, Sylar and Peter. Somebody needs to stay dead for once.
He wasn't dead in the first place. The shot missed his heart in case you're medically challenged.
>> There's no more "conflict" like there was with him in season 1, and another season of awkward moments between Nathan and Peter would be bad.
Huh? Why would a character can only be good when there's conflict? A character can be spun off to different direction from where they originally started. If Peter remains as foolish as he was back in S1, there'll be no story for him left.
>> The only direction to take him is Claire/Nathan, which truth be told would be like a boring rehash of Claire/HRG.
Huh, again. Claire barely knows Nathan and unlike HRG, Nathan is not exactly strict in terms of what Claire can or can't do. Since he never spends much time with Claire, he'll be less likely to act in a 'fatherly' capacity. It'll be interesting to see their development as father/daughter.
In addition to this, there is potential in Nathan being the leader of the special people. There's no other character in this series who has a background in politic, something which is important when the special people are outed to the public. Sooner or later, this can't remain a secret and the public would have to deal with it.
>> You've brought him back once, along with Parkman, Sylar and Peter.
Peter has been brought back at least 3 times now. It's stupid to kill a character who still has a use in the show and contributes so much to interaction with other characters (ie. Hiro, Matt, Peter). And again, he wasn't dead in the first place anyway. In the first season, he only got severe burns. If he was dying, he would have croaked within a week. As for this season, he got shot twice in the chest just like Matt Parkman except that it's from a distance and instead of 4 bullets, it's only 2. The shot also missed the heart. It's ridiculous if he's dead because there's no reason for him to be dead in the first place.
>> Somebody needs to stay dead for once.
Yes, that would be Niki.

Err...why should one of the best characters in the series be dead to accommodate another character's development? And we're talking about Peter here, who's already the most powerful character in the series. Peter doesn't need more development. He already got most of it back in season 1 and early this season (you know, when he was isolated in Ireland and was given a lot of screen time to justify his plot).
Most of all, I'm sick of Peter being seen as "THE MAIN CHARACTER" of the series. He's not. He's just one of the characters in the series. Frankly, I'm sick of seeing him being given preferential treatment just because a bunch of teeny-boopers are hot for him.
I've been a good girl this year so can I ask that Nathan will be alive in volume 3 as Christmas present please?
Love
Helena
Great season nonetheless - I loved the Adam Monroe character and thought the story with him and Peter was brilliant.
Shame the boogey man from Series 1 only turned out to be the reading man's dead - I was expecting a baddy worse than Sylar or is that Maya?
Stevo
Hello Greg!
Hope you are doing great.
First of all, thanks for posting all this awesome stuff on your blog, it makes us feel like we are part of Heroes as well :) Keep up the awesome work on the show!
Second, I just wanted to add myself to all those Nathan fans who want him to stay alive and also let you know that the members of the SaveNathanPetrelli Campaign (and I as one of them) have named a star after Adrian Pasdar to show our support to the actor and the character himself.
Now you can´t kill a star right? because it will keep shining no matter what :)
Here you can see the certificate so you dont think we are joking:
http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/3920/adstar2dd7.jpg
I just received it yesterday, we are planning on giving it to Adrian whenever I have the chance :)
So Save Nathan, save a star! :D
I'll admit there were a few rough patches during this season but I have faith in all of you who are working on the show to bring Heroes back for the fans.
I forgot to mention in my previous post that Sylar is one of the best characters in Heroes, and I'm so, so glad you all kept him on. Although a lot of fans are tired of him by now, I think there's endless potential for his character and the directions he could go. Contrary to what others think, I really liked Suresh's arc and I thought he was much more interesting this season than in Season 1. I guess it's partly because both Sendhil and Zachary are smokin' hot, but Mohinder and Sylar are my favorite characters (also because of their character development and personalities) and I hope they meet up again in the future. They have amazing chemistry together!
Brush the haters off Greg :) I'm sure we'll all be glued to our TV screens when Heroes returns for Season 3.

Peter. He's the main one, because he is the firts one to appear an he wants to be someone. Peter hope he saves Caitlin, but no that he has changed the future, but perhaps Peter has Shanti's virus inside him, he may need a cure as well doesn it. Hope Mr Devaux or Simone appear on his Dream Visions, maybe that's Simone's power as well, the same as his dad.
Mohinder. He is the one that looks more in the story, because of his theories and discoveries. Maya will become a love interest.
Claire. She too, because she wants a normal life without her powers, perhaps in the final season's she will loose her powers, I would love to se more relation of Claire with Nathan, and that Meredith comes back, but one thing, that Noah/HRG and rest of Bennet family replace the Petrelli/Gordon relation because they are more Claire's family, at least I want her to tell Nathan father fo once, at accepts him, It not his fault.
Nathan. Hope he makes it truly, he deserves to live until the end, if he lives hope he makes it with surgery, or perhaps that he is in coma, put that West flies Claire to him, but if he is supposed to die, give him a return in future volume or season, that the Company revives him, cause Peter may go bersek with his death and whants revenge, and Nathan is their final resource of stoping him. An instead of Nathan that can fly, give the idea that he's true power is wind, give him attack powers for defense, Nathan (wind/flight) + Meredith (fire) = Claire (regeneration). True reason to keep him alive not only cause we are fans of him is because he need to solve his marriage, look more secrets on the company, discover who shoot him, Claire must see that he cares for others, and have a confrontation with Noah/HRG about Claire, and finaly, you make a big mistake if West can replace Nathan, change Nathan to wind better, Nathan is not an old Generation, he's a new one.
NATHAN BACK PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hiro. He is an essential one too, more in this season, because of him Adam/Kensei is like he is, and he is similar like Peter in some aspects, only that Hiro is mor childish and Peter is manipulated very easy, except Nathan that truly speaks with him with the heart. I dont have how Hiro's story will continue, only that his battle with Adam/Kensei is not over. Hope that Ando is only a human and has no hability, I prefer him as a human and being with Hiro the funny due of the show, and more Hiro/Nathan "Flying man" funny moments.
Nikki. She is a dificult one, many said that Jessica now that she is a good girl is the one to come back, but she is infected by the Virus, she doesnt have her strenght anymore, perhaps she found a way to escape the explosion or perhaps someone save her, who knows, or perhaps the virus infected Nikki's self, but not the rest of her personalities, but hope she makes it, If Knox is a villain to return she is the only one that can stop him, Monica may not have a chance but now that she will become St Jordan, Micah should be able too fight with his Power, that he controls wires to that help him to protect him self. NIKKI BACK PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Matt. He'll investigate more his personal case about the company, and hope there are many othet organizations similar, that have different pourpose with people with habilities, and that he develops more his powers, and funny scenes with Nathan too, but it looks that this time he will team with Peter now.
Elle, Kristen Bell truly rocks, she was a good choice truly, she must last long, good the idea that she is Claire's sister and that West is Bob's son, Elle has now a pourpose, to know who she is, becase in the episode 2x11 she looks for her file and is empty, she has a mission now, but she is still with the company, make that she is now Noah/HRG's partner and that at the same time he tries to help her, but she must cooperate to help him too. But not good idea if Peter meets her, cause he wants to revenge Caitlin's brother's death and if Peter finds Caitlin she'll be in truble.
Noah/HRG. Give him great roles as you have give him, dont make him Nathan's shooter, and that he still tries to went down the company in secret, and with Elle's help, Noah/HRG has still unfinished buisness that respect Claire and now with Nathan, truly.
Sylar. Give him the best you can, put villains soo that Sylar kill's them an obtain his powers, that he pretends to be friends with him, but wath he really wants is a great huge buffet for himself, that he kills one by one, to abtain their power, make Sylar a difficult opponent, even for Peter.
THAT'S WHAT I HOPE FOR THESE CHARACTERS, KEEP NATHAN (PASDAR) AND NIKKI (LARTER) ALIVE AND IN THE SHOW, IF THEY QUIT AT LEAST MAKE US KNOW, OR THAT EVEN THEY ARE COMING BACK, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please bring Nathan back. His character has grown so much and has been the most enjoyable to watch on the show.
There is so much more you can do with this character on the show.
The show wouldn't be the same for me without Nathan.
Your blog is fun!
Neko
PETER, CLAIRE, NATHAN, HIRO, NIKKI, MATT AND MOHINDER, THEY ARE THE ORIGINAL ONES, PLEASE LET THEM LAST LONG WILL YA, DONT BRING NEW ONES SOO YOU CAN KILL THE OLD SCHOOL, BRING NEW ONES AS GUESTS, REMEMBER THE INTRODUCTION WHEN GENESIS STARTED, IF YOU WANT TO KILL THEM DO IT ON THE FINAL SEASON. AS WELL KEEP SYLAR AND NOAH/HRG. OF THE SECOND SEASON KEEP SPECIALLY ELLE. KEEP THE NAMED ONES IN MY COMMENT, THEY ARE ESSENTIAL AND THOSE ARE THE FIRST ONES TO BEING SHOWN ON THE POSTERS THAT PRESENTED THE SHOW, KEEP THEM STILL.
SAVE THE ORIGINAL ONES, KILL THE NEW ONES, EXCEPT KRISTEN BELL.
KEEP MILO VENTIMIGLA, HAYDEN PANETTIERE, ADRIAN PASDAR, MASI OKA, ALI LARTER, GREG GRUNBERG, SHENDIL RAMAMURTHY, JACK COLEMAN, KRISTEN BELL AND ZACHARY QUINTO, IF YOU KILL THE ORIGINALS VEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERY SOON IN THE FIRST TWO VOLUME , YOU WASTE YOUR TALENT, KEEP THEM LONGER, EVEN IF THEIR POWER ARENT THAT GOOD, INTED DEVELOPT MORE THEIR POWERS.
I'm no one to critizice your work, the show is awsome, but just be sure of what you do, POWERLESS was awsome, you trully trilled us with NATHA AND NIKKI'S FATES, hope YOU along the CREW, WRITERS and KRING BRING THEM BACK.
GREG BEEMAN, YOU ARE ONE OF THE MASTERMINDS OF THE SHOW, I LOVED THE SCENE OF PETER AND NATHAN'S EXPLOSION SCENE, THAT WAS YOUR DOING, THE BEST EFFECT OF THE SHOW AT DATE, KEEP THAT, THAT SCENE MAKE YOU WORTH DIRECTOR, WHY JEPH LOEB HAVE TO INCLUDE THOSE FATES ON "POWERLESS", WE'LL FOR NOW THEY ARE UNSURE, BUT KEEP THEM BOTH NATHAN AND NIKKI, AT LEAST IF THEY RETURN IN FUTURE EPISODES MAKE US FANS KNOW.
IM NOT SURE FOR NIKKI, SHE'S A VERY COMPLICATED ONE, BUT HOPE SHE'S BACK, AND NATHAN HAS TO SURVIVE TOO, IF HE DIES HOW IMAGINATING DEATH, THE SAME AS SIMONE THAT WAS SHOOT IN THE CHEST BY ISAAC.
BOTH NATHAN AND NIKKI HAVE A QUEST TO FOLLOW, AND HERE ARE THE REASONS:
NIKKI & REST OF HER PERSONALYTIES. Micah and Monica are in perill now in the season perhaps, cause if it is true that Knox will appear now she's the only one that can stop him, but she's infected by Shanti Virus now, hope she find a escape in the burning warehouse, or perhaps someone saved her,If many say Jessica is back now that she's a good girl now, perhaps it will mean that the one under the starin of the virus is Nikki and not the rest of her pesonalyties, and other question is about the items in the bault on Primatech in Odessa, whats their meaning, those items still have something to follow right, because there was a dagger, and in the comic of 9th WONDERS of Micah it was shown in the cover St. Jordan welding it.
NATHAN (if you think that WEST can replace Nathan you are completly insane, make him Bob's son as planed, and that Elle is Claire's sister). We havent seen any interaction with Nathan and Claire, if they dont then what was the pourpose of being Claire's biological father, at least I want her to call him "dad" or "father" for once and accept him, that he cares for others trully, if they kill him those are better the final word he hears, also include a showdown between him with Noah/HRG about Claire (If they both die Nathan and Noah/HRG I prefer that Noah/HRG dies first, Nathan was more a main character/cast to beggin with), and in the whole Volume 2 there where only 5 minutes of Peter and Nathan reunion, HEROES need the Petrelli's Brotherly Love (many underestimate it like gay put its completly opposite). If Nathan dies I prefer he dies in the LAST/Volume or BEFORE-LAST/Volume season. If Nathan dies it will be better and beautiful if he's killed by the most powerfull villain or bad guy of the show in the LAST SEASON and that he dies in Peter and Claire's arms in the final episodes, close to the end. Speaking about FINAL SEASON how many season are planed for the show. NOTE: Give Nathan the hability to control or manipulate the wind, like a wind caster.
CONTINUE THE SHOW KEEP THE NAMED ONES IN THIS COMMENT ALIVE, THEY DESERVE TO SAVE THE WORLD. HOPE THIS REACH THE "HEROES" CAST AND CREW FAMILY ^-^ HAVE A HAPPY NEW YEAR.
IF YOU KILL NATHAN YOU KILL PETER good bye to the best brother relationship in a TV-show, Ventimigla has said he wants him to stay, listen to him, CLAIRE well, the bio-dad will never have forgivness of her daughter, HIRO good bye "Flying Man" funny moments, NIKKI even if they have little moments, MATT good bye to the best duo partnership, MOHINDER they meet but almost never interact much, and specially HOAH/HRG because of the never showdown with him with Nathan regarding Claire, Coleman has staited too, cause he hasnt work much with him since the little seconds in 1x05 "Hiros" when he and the Haitian take him and Nathan escapes, and possibly ELLE, cool if she's Nathan's true daughter too, Claire and Elle would have been twins then, but Elle looks, no ofence Bell, older, but still both, no, all the female cast of HEROES are beutiluf and cute.
NIKKI WELL, SHE DIDNT DO MUCH IN THE VOLUME 2 SADLY, ITS HARD FOR ME WHAT TO TELL ABOUT HER, BUT STILL, SHE MUST STAY IN THE SHOW, SHE HAS TO FIGHT KNOX IF ITS TRUE ABOUT VOLUME 3'S VILLAINS.
I ALREADY RECEIVED SEASON 1 DVD AS PRESENT, AN IT LOOKS MORE LIKE A MOVIE THAN A TV SERIES, IT WILL BE THE EFECTS DOESN IT.
DONT LET GO ADRIAN PASDAR NOR ALI LARTER PLEASE... WE FAN'S BEG YOU, OR INTEAD OF A "WRITERS STRIKE GUILD", YOU MAY HAVE A "BRING BACK NATHAN AND NIKKI HEROES FAN STRIKE GUILD". ^-^!... IF THEY LEFT THE SHOW TELL US INSTEAD, PLEASE, NOW KNOWING THAT LARTER IS ENGAGED, AND PASDAR WE ARE NOT SURE WHY WOULD HE LIVE, IN ALL THE HEROES PHOTOS IN THIS BLOG EVERYONE, THE CAST AND CREW LOOKS LIKE A FAMILY, WHY WOULD THEY LEAVE THE SHOW, INCLUDED THEIR RESPECTIVE FAMILIES, NOW T-T, CONSIDER US FAN'S YOUR FAMILY TOO.
Milo Ventimigla - Peter Petrelli (last all the show till the end)
Shendil Ramamurthy - Mohinder Suresh (last all the show till the end)
Hayden Penetierre - Claire Bennet (last all the show till the end)
Adrian Pasdar - Nathan Petrelli (last all the show till the end)
Masi Oka - Hiro Nakamura (last all the show till the end) (James Kyson Lee - Ando Masahashi is included in Hiro's arc, i dont see him as a core character)
Ali Larter - Nikki Sanders (last all the show till the end) (Noah Gray-Cabey - Micah Sanders is included in Nikki's arc, and Dana Davis - Monica Dawson is included in Micah's arc, both Micah and Monica i dont see them as a core character)
Greg Grunberg - Matt Parkman (last all the show till the end)
Jack Coleman - Noah Bennet aka HRG (at the beggining he wasn't a core character, but now he deserves to be at the end of the show)
Zachary Quinto - Gabriel Gray aka Sylar (at the beggining he was a recurring characters, but still in season 1 he make a good role, he should be considered as a core character, he must last in the show)
From the new cast of Second Season that include Volume 2 and Volume 3, the new main ones for me are to stay longer, are:
Kristen Bell - Elle Bishop (hope from the second season presented characters she's one to last forever in the show)
David Anders - Adam Monroe/ Takezo Kensei (he can stay for now)
Dania Ramirez - Maya Herrera (she can stay for now)
HOPE THE CORE CHARACTERS MENTIONED IN MY COMENT LAST FOR LONG BUT SPECIALLY > Peter, Claire, Nathan, Hiro, Nikki, Matt and Mohinder, they have to live till the end of HEROES in the LAST Volume/Season, or the BEFORE LAST Volume/Season.
LAST, HOW MANY SEASON/VOLUME'S ARE FOR HEROES TO RELEASE.
The biggest problem, in my opinion, is that a show like Heroes has to be character driven as opposed to plot driven. Someone decided to make it plot driven, and the characters were reduced to pieces to be moved around on a board to satisfy the requirements of the plot. In doing so, the characters were sacrificed, and the characters are what people love about the show. Claire is a good example. In season 1, I loved her. She was smart and strong and independent. She watched her father take a bullet for her, and she accepted responsibility for herself and for her abilities. That changed in Season 2. In order to satisfy teh plot, she became weak and vapid, and suddenly turned into a whiny, petulant, spoiled child whose irresponsible (and incomprehensible) actions led to her father's death. By the end of Season 2, I wished Claire was dead because I'd grown to despise her for her stupidity and her weakness and the damage she had done to everyone around her by her selfishness. Sylar is another character who suffered in Season 2. In season 1 he was a wonderfully complex villain, a tragic figure of sorts. Like Peter and Hiro, he wanted desperately to be spacial and to be a hero, but he took a darker path and he seemed to have some regrets. In season 2, you guys really should have had Zachary Quinto grow a mustache, since all Sylar did was look evil and twirl his mustache. You turned him into Snidely Whiplash. He was completely wasted, especially given that you had plenty of advance notice that he'd be off filming Star Trek for the original Volume 3. Many people felt empathy for Gabriel and could understand how he turned into Sylar; during Season 2 he was nothing more than a remorseless killing machine with no sign of Gabriel or his inner conflict. He desperately needs that spark of humanity, that secret desire to be a hero, the suppressed agony, in order to make him stand out from the stereotypical villain.
Another problem with making the show plot driven is that there was no room for characters to grow. There were no repercussions. Mohinder probably suffered the worst here. He's a scientist, one who was originally horrified when he moved to New York and encountered violence and conspiracies. In Volume 2, he murdered Bennet in cold blood, right in front of Claire. This should have been a huge plot and a huge leap in character development for Mohinder. He should have been questioning everything - himself, his soul, the company. his world should have been shattered. Yet there was no apparent effect at all on him. He shrugged it off and never showed any signs of remorse or conflict. It was as if it never happened. This was a goldmine, when it comes to character development, yet it was ignored in favor of Peter sans shirt and Maya crying yet again.
There have been spoilers leaked for season 3, although I'm taking them with a grain of salt. The rumor mill is again hyping the death of a major cast member. When will you people get it through your heads that killing off the cast pisses off and alienates the audience? People watch because they love the characters. Killing those characters, especially pointlessly (like DL) does not make people want to watch your show. It makes them turn it off, and tell their friends not to bother. If you want to be radical and edgy, do so by not killing off any more cast members. Nathan and Niki were woefully abused this season, and killing them off at the season finale has only served to further alienate and anger your fans.
Once the strike is over, think about how to make the show work as a character driven program. Making it plot driven is obviously destined to fail spectacularly. I'd frankly rater see it end than watch the characters I love turned into hollow pawns and then killed off for shock value during sweeps month. You guys have a lot of atonement, and getting the characters the viewers love front and center and doing right by them needs to be the top priority.
Killing them off just for shock's sake is lame.
Milo Ventimigla - Peter Petrelli
Shendil Ramamurthy - Mohinder Suresh
Hayden Penetierre - Claire Bennet
Adrian Pasdar - Nathan Petrelli
Masi Oka - Hiro Nakamura
Ali Larter - Nikki Sanders
Greg Grunberg - Matt Parkman
Jack Coleman - Noah Bennet aka HRG
Kristen Bell - Elle Bishop
Zachary Quinto - Gabriel Gray aka Sylar
IF THOSE NAMES DIE, I HOPE ALL OF THEM DIE AS TRUE HEROES AT THE LAST SEASON/VOLUME, BECAUSE LIKE THAT THEIR STORY WILL END, GREG, PLEASE, KEEP THEM, NO NEW HEROES, EVEN POWERFULL ONES CAN'T REPLACE THEM, THEY ARE THE HEART OF THE SHOW.
Develop powers to Nathan: Like we all know he can fly, but he flies at a very accelerated speed, like a misile. Many especulate that Arthur Petrelli's power was controlling the weather, It should be awsome that could be Nathan's power too (similar to Matt=Muray, that father and son sare the same habilities), evolved more, for now great if he can control the wind I would say, that could make him powerfull as Matt, at least Nathan could have an attack power, like Elle with lightning, Sylar with telechinesis, or Meredith with fire. If I could tell Matt is becoming very similar as Profesor X of X-men, Nathan could be similar like Storm of X-Men, that could be awsome for him, that power.
Develop powers to Nikki. It could be awome that she's like Peter, have habilities of others, but only If she witness their deaths, perhaps like she has Jessica's habilitie, her sister, it may be that Nikki's true power is have diferent personalities of people that have died near her with their habilities (Maybe Nikki's sister, Jessica's power is super-strenght), or that she can create them (Nikki created Gina), maybe a way that she could escape the wharehouse is that she may have D.L.'s personality inside her (she may have his power as well), she may recall their power when she's her normal self, that may explain why Gina had super strenght too. NOTE: Nikki is still infected by the virus, Im I correct, maybe it affects Nikki, but the rest of her personalities dont, maybe she'll apear as Jessica, Gina or perhaps DL if she makes an appearance again an I hope that, but not like Nikki because the true self is infected, Nikki cant have more personalities because of that soo she cant still be Jessica, Nikki or perhaps DL (weird that huh), but cool.
Those are good ways of develop powers for Nathan and Nikki, that they start by simle habilities but they evolve them, PLEASE GREG, THEY STIL HAVE THEIR ROLES TO PLAY (like Linderman said in 1x19).
THE EXPLOSION IN "GENESIS"...
THE VIRUS IN "GENERATIONS"...
ARE JUST THE BEGGINING, IN "VILLAINS" THE WAR HAS JUST BEGUN, I guess ^-^.
Two last questions:
About DL's mother Paulette Hawkins, how did she died, the last we saw of her was in 1x03 when Nikki drop by along with Micah, and in Volume 2 now it appears that she's death, how did she died, huh, is there some mistake?
Simone could have the same hability as her father, Mr Devaux, that she can appear in the dreams, perhaps their souls still wander the earth, they could guide Peter in his quest?
I beg of you! Please??????????????
Heh. I also lost interest but not because of Nathan or Niki but because of what I heard about Milo and Hayden. What happens between the two are off-putting for me (30 and 18? Ugh), to put it mildly. I know I should be able to differentiate between actors and characters but this is just too much. I don't think I can stomach the idea of seeing the two without being reminded of what happen in the real world.
That rumor is just tabloid nonsense. They are friends-only, trust me. I work for a celeb rag and if they were a couple for REAL, we would know. Tabloids and paparazzi are just trying to stir up something to write about, but there's nothing there.
The rest is nonsense. Its not like shes an innocent teenager seduced by her teacher. She's a young adult and she has a good family that has been very supportive about her decision to be with Milo and seem to be very cool with him. If they, as parents, are not bothered, why should we?
They're both grown ups, gorgeous and talented, and if theyre not dating maybe they should, despite of the age difference, its stupid, I mean get over it, its their lives, get one for yourself.
Final... BRING NATHAN () AND NIKKI () BACK, WE BEG YOU, BY ANY METODS, HOPE MY LAST COMMENT OF YESTERDAY WAS READED ABOUT POSSIBLE DEVELOP POWERS FOR BOTH OF THEM... LONG LIFE FOR NATHAN AND NIKKI.
I know you're a real busy man, and that you're a producer not a writer, but would you happen to know whats the up on the strike? I mean we (fans) get snippets of whats going on but I don't think we're really being told everything thats going on. And I'd really like to hear from an insider and know when we'll be seeing Heroes again! If you could post an entry on the current situations of it all that would be awesome!
Thanks a ton -Niki
PS: I think you're an awesome producer and that your cast crew are simply the best of the best.
haha Greg did you know that there's a petition out there to keep Nathan alive? Well I hope Nathan stays alive also haha but I bet the show will still be great with whatever choice made... (hopefully though tim decides to be nice to all of us adrian/nathan fans hehe)
TV characters that are missed
Quoted below:
The Brothers Petrelli, “Heroes”. . They count as one, because they’re two sides of the same coin. A hot, hot coin. Peter traded in his Emo Bangs of Sadness for the Buzz Cut of New Purpose, while Nathan went wild with the Unruly Curls of Dissipation. No, I didn’t particularly enjoy Peter’s plotline during the fall season (Peter : “Caitliiiin!!!” :: Michael : “Waaaaalt!”), but I enjoyed having him on my screen anyway. And Nathan’s endearing rapport with Parkman (“Get out your gun.”) was priceless.
That being said, here are some thoughts on season 2. While I was not particularly upset to see that Nathan's fate is yet again undetermined, I WAS disappointed by how many of the new heroes in season 2 survived. (Even Maya after being shot?) I didn't like any of the new characters other than Elle, and it felt like they took away too much screen time from the old characters I liked so much. (I actually left the TV to get food during their scenes which never happened during Season 1!) I hope that the emphasis will be shifted when you guys come back.
Also, it's always been said that Heroes is giving a real life touch to people with super powers - something different from comic books. However in recent episodes, there have been too many "revival from the dead" for it to feel real. In real life, when someone die, they really die and the people around them suffer. That's something I'd actually like to see a character go through to change how they are as a person (like future Hiro). In fact, the constant "oh they're not really dead" and "people you think are dead just may be alive" is starting to feel very comic book-ish and cliche.
I mean, when characters die and those deaths have true significance and emotion (Hiro's father, DL, Nathan's first near death encounter etc) they have weight and meaning. Being quickly asassinated in some big anti-climax is pointless, especially not for someone as integral as Nathan.
it was sooo great job all of you have done!
can't wait for volume 3 and...
bring niki and nathan back~
oh no! sylar is cattified!
He's just the most important character in the show - he is the one who binds the rest of them together, the only one who can help Peter deal with his powers and do the right thing. He is the one everyone looks up to when they need a leader. His chemistry with the other characters is just refreshing and essential to the story.
And there is no reason why he should die. It just does not make sense and it would not help anything. His death would be a complete waste of the best character and one of the best actors on the show.
Just please be sensible and give him back.
Save Nathan - Save the Show - Save the World!!!
Nathan might dies...
Nikki might dies...
Is this show about who is gonna die and who is gonna resurrect now ?
The only complex characters remaining are Elle and Angela. All the others (who used to be ambiguous, touching, fascinating etc.) became stupid and unauthentic.
Peter is too powerful and he acted stupidly almost all through the second season, Peter is supposed to be naif yet intuitive not dumb.
And what about the elders ? their story was promising but we've learn almost nothing about them DYING too fast.
So Sad... But I still have hope !
Please for the love of Pete get Heroes back on ASAP or suffer the fate of Lost. Work weekends, the summer, whatever, but for once put us the fans FIRST and get this show back on ASAP.
I've only seen a few episodes, so I'm trying my best to catch up to all of this. I don't know if Claire is still in high school, but I'm hoping the character can tie in with her.
Even Milo said:
"It'd be really, really bad to lose Adrian [Pasdar]. Regardless of whether or not Nathan's character has run its course, losing Adrian on that show for me personally would be a tragedy. It would be a different show."
First of all, thank you for making such a wonderful show! I haven't enjoyed TV so much in years, and I've looked foward to each new episode of Heroes that has aired ever since the first season. I heard that you guys read every single fan e-mail and note you receive, so I just thought I would write and tell you that.
Secondly, I wanted to say that despite all the criticisms of Volume 2, I still enjoyed it very much, and I'm looking forward to Volume 3. That's not to say that there weren't things I wanted to see changed or done differently in Volume 2, because there were, but on the whole this is still my favorite show on the air right now, and the only one I watch every single week it's on.
I hope you keep Kristen Bell on the show. Elle was my favorite new character this year, and Kristen is such a terrific actress. Not to mention the fact that she has great chemistry with Milo--Peter/Elle was the first Peter "ship" you guys tried that really worked for me, because the characters have new and interesting ways of relating to each other, and there's conflict and tension between them.
And I certainly wouldn't mind more scenes with the Petrellis! They are the best thing about the show. I know the Ireland plot wasn't so popular this season, and I think the main problem was that you isolated Peter too much. He's my favorite character, and the reason why he worked so well in Season 1 was because he kept connecting to everybody: Claire, Isaac, Nathan, Matt, Mohinder...I'd love to see that again in Volume 3. Both Peter and Claire were so cut off from everyone and everything else this season.
But that's just a minor gripe--really, I'm a huge fan and I love the show and everyone involved with it. You guys all look like you're having a great time. Thanks again for a great show, and keep up the good work!
Niki Sanders is a Peter Girl
Niki Absorbs the power from special people dead.
And Linda Tavara absorbs the aura.
It would be amazing a fight between Peter vs. Sylar,And Sylar Girl(Linda) vs. Peter Girl(Niki)
She is incredibly talented
Give more attention to her.
She is the best actress in the show.
Niki and Peter make a beautiful couple, see:

So. Much. Word. I'm appalled by the rudeness and entitlement in some of these comments.
Greg, thank you for giving us such an amazing look at the behind-the-scenes aspects of the show. It's amazingly generous of you. I love Heroes and cannot wait for Volume 3.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that Nathan isn't the be all and end all of the Heroes experience for me. We all have different points of view, and we don't have to agree. And the Heroes writers and producers don't necessarily have to listen to what we say or accede to our demands. Just because a few vocal fans post the same things over and over on this blog doesn't mean that this is what the entire audience thinks and feels (and say what you will, a few dozen or even a few hundred fans is only a tiny subset of the entire viewing audience.)
If they start "writing to order," I think that would be really bad for the show. Greg, just do what you need to do. Your show is awesome and I think Volume 2 was underrated.
But that isn't (IMO) because of the intrinsic, innate limitations and possibilities of the two characters involved. It's not because it's impossible to create good storylines and scenes for Peter and impossible to create bad storylines and scenes for Nathan. It's because the writers put more care and thought into Nathan's screentime this season. It doesn't make sense to say that they killed the "wrong" brother--who says they had to kill one?
I for one would stop watching if they killed off Peter.
but - where are the pictures of the girls doin' their thing?
Or better yet? Volume four:ZOMBIES. TALK IT OVER WITH THE REST OF THE CREW. THINK ABOUT IT!
It`s the question of all Claude and Chris fans!
Please update your blog! Give us 'something'. This hiatus is TOO, TOO LONGGGGG!
:)
Just to say some of you people commenting truly are idiots. Nathan's charachter is good and almost certainly will be back imo.
However, if it doesnt it will be to serve a particular plot line not just to satisy people who like certain characters!
Also Sylar is like the best character along with Peter and a face off would be great. I dunno basically what I'm trying to say is trust the heroes team as so far they have delivered well.
Mr. Jiff
I'm a fan of Heroes and I'm from Hungary. I think your blog is very interest:) And the pictures are very, very good!:) I desire an additional good writing and work!
