Episode 11: Fallout

Last night’s was episode 11, which in some ways is the end of the first chapter of the first season. After last night we stop airing new episodes until late January.

It’s actually amazing that we’ve gotten that many episodes on the air in a row. I’ve worked on a lot of TV and - on any show that premieres in late September or early October - I’ve never seen one that got more that 9 on the air. Most 1 hour shows on TV shoot for eight shooting days… more or less 10 working days. A new episode airs every 7 days. The math of all this catches up to you, until there’s less and less time per episode to edit, do music and sound effects and visual effects. Add to that the fact that HEROES usually shoots for 10 or 12 days and it gets even worse.

Everyone who works in post production kicked butt on this … I’ll single out Donn Aron the editor - he did an amazing job in a short amount of time – and did some particularly inventive things in Peter’s dream sequence and in the scene where Matt interrogates Peter… Look for all the hidden jump cuts and speed-ups as the two guys try to read each other’s minds…. Hats off also to Lori Motyer the co-producer who is in charge of all things in post production. There was less than a week from the time Allan Arkush and the editor locked picture for Lori to color time the show, on-line it, oversee the sound mix and the visual affects and make sure that it physically got finished.

Editor Donn Aron

Co-Producer Lori Motyer's empty office (she was too busy running around working to be photographed)

The episode was directed by John Badham. He has a few credits: http://imdb.com/name/nm0000824/

It was crazy working with John Badham – I mean for God’s sakes he directed SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER, WAR GAMES, BLUE THUNDER and STAKEOUT. So it was frankly kinda weird to be like, “OK Mr. Badham, here’s how we shoot our show. And… “Make sure you get plenty of low angles and cool shots.”

I was actually pretty nervous meeting him – but he was full-on the world’s nicest guy. A true pro and a true gentleman. What surprised me when I went to his imdb sight was how much television he had done – starting in the late sixties and continuing recently it is A LOT. He’s the kind of director you really want on a show like this. No matter how big the scene was he was never flustered. He was cool with all of us producers and our many strong opinions about how we want our show to be. And he shot things with seeming effortlessness.

Director John Badham

John and Masi

Also, how cool was the final sequence – Peter’s dream sequence in NYC – Like I say, HEROES is like a TV show, only bigger. We shut down 4 city blocks on a Sunday. We jammed the streets with empty cars to create a deserted, neutron bomb look. It was also the first time ever that the whole cast was together. We had cranes stedicams and three cameras - It was intense amount of work to do in one day… And beside the scene you saw Monday night there was a second version shot with more characters and more information which will be used in one or more future episodes

All very exciting…. STAY TUNED!!!!

Hey Guys, just want to say that this first arc was really great. I love the way you guys are handling this show, please keep up the good work! Everyone's dedication is truly paying off . . . I'm hooked for seasons to come!

You guys are the best! Such a great show,I hope you won't tire of producing quality and excellent episodes of Heroes. Kudos to all the people who made this show possible!

Wow. All the work you kids are doing over there is truly impressive. My friends and I call each other every Tuesday and marvel over the way you all manage to pull off such a amazing show so consistently from week to week. The wait until January is really going to hurt. I take comfort in knowing that you all will then give us something spectacular. You've raised the bar to extraordinary heights, but in such a (seemingly) effortless way that I have nothing but admiration for the whole cast and crew. I've come to appreciate the way story arc is handled, and that for every question raised there's confidence that an answer is forthocming——unlike certain *other* shows (I'm looking at you Lost). Thanks for making Mondays something to look forward to, and good luck with the rest of the season. *high fives*

The one thing I absolutely love about Heroes is that I have such a hard time predicting it. I have always said that if I can't predict something, it means that it is good. I also find it to be a bit of a muse- I hope to get into the film industry someday. But I do have a character idea- someone with super-eyesight. Like xray-vision, but more powerful. They can eventually (as they grow their power) see across states, the country, and who knows- across oceans even. You probably get suggestions like this all the time, but I thought it would be a cool idea, so I just thought I would share it with you.
Keep up the amazing work!

Greg - I'm not even sure you read all these comments but thank you again for sharing these insights. The manhours put into each episode, esp. as the time crunch kicks in, is really bearing fruit. Every episode has had a quality to it that's just lacking in so many other TV shows today. Enjoy the well deserved break, and we'll see y'all on Jan 22. Happy Holidays!

Monday night's show was a great show. I hope you and the entire cast and crew have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Look forward to next month

Not since Buffy/Angel have I waited so eagerly for each new episode.

Not once has an episode disappointed me.

Cast & crew are clearly all talented.

Thankyou all, happy xmas and best wishes for ten more seasons!

Greg, thanks for all the hard work you and the whole cast and crew put in to create the most fantastic show I can remember in my short time here on earth. :)

Whew, January 22....I'll need to pop some of those Parkman pills to make it!

A couple of questions (if you read these)....will there be a return of all 11 episodes during this hiatus?...on NBC or Sci-Fi? I see a great marketing effort to snag new converts.

Also, I know you probably will sleep as much as possible, :) but even on hiatus, I soak up any blog posts you might include!

Re: The Matt

They filmed this in Los Angeles, not New york, they don't have the budget to do a big location shoot - remember, every shot for the show is done around the general LA area. If you enlarge the photo that shows "49th St.", you'll see palm trees there, those don't grow in NYC too well :)

In another photo, you can see part of a bakery sign. Some intuitive guesses and switchboard.com leads us to:

Mocha Java Bakery
530 S Grand Ave
Los Angeles, CA

On the map it looks like that's at 5th & Grand. Why no 49th st? Well, my guess is they stuck up that sign to make it "seem" like NYC...

That was a interesting epd and a great twist to the ending. I always thought it was the other guy with the radioactive powers that would blow up the city but then again with Heroes it all may change at the end.

I don't watch a lot of TV, I'm too busy working on my degree, and on my graphic design and illustration business. However, Heroes is the only show I've watched every episode of consequently. The way it is put together is amazing, it clues information in earlier episodes that begin to make sense in later ones, forcing the viewer to watch earlier episodes again for more clues on what will happen in later episodes. Displaying every character's story and showing how they are relevant to the plot, and to the existence of one another. Using scientific theory such as Darwinism to make it appear as if something like this could actually happen. Brilliant! I envy your job, wish I could do something like that for a living.

Cool prophetic dream. Now can you production guys please not kill Nathan, as you strongly hint in said dream?

I'm pretty sure you guys can write your way out of this one while leaving Pasdar in the cast next year. C'mon, please?

To be quite honest, I didn't expect much from this show, but I figured I didn't have anything better to do before "Studio 60" came on.

Boy, I sure didn't expect to get so hooked so fast. And this last ep just proves that the goodness wasn't a fluke.

I actually teared up during the end sequence in Peter's dream. MAN, that's powerful stuff!!

Keep up the good work!!! :)
I'm a rabid television viewer and watch 50-70 hours of it per week. Sure, most of it's work-related but still...if I don't really like the show I won't tune in.

HEROES is the kind of show where, even if my apartment building was burning to the ground and a brave and sexy-looking fire-fighter was banging on my door in an attempt to rescue me, I'd stay put in my chair...right to the very end, so I wouldn't miss the awesome cliff hanger you guys always tack on to the end of each ep.

Yes, I'm willing to risk dying an agonizing death just to watch your show, Greg. How's that for dedication?

From the way Mr. Beeman was talking, the shoot was done in NYC, "Peter’s dream sequence in NYC – Like I say, HEROES is like a TV show, only bigger. We shut down 4 city blocks on a Sunday. We jammed the streets with empty cars to create a deserted, neutron bomb look. It was also the first time ever that the whole cast was together."

See, this is why I have such respect for the people behind the scenes in tv and film; EVERYTHING is produced one way or another. I do have to admit though that the construction schedule simply boggles my mind. Thank you so much for these behind-the-scenes looks into the work of the people making the world of Heroes so tangible and real. I would have never thought of certain sets as being only that——sets——because they felt so real on screen.

The one question I have is how many people and how many hours were needed to make all those origami cranes? It was really beautiful.

Is there any chance you'll be interviewing the props and costume people? ;-j

Thanks again!
