WARNING – SOME SPOILERS ARE CONTAINED WITHIN
Tonight’s episode was written by Tim Kring, and directed by me – your humble blogger. Oh, also, I’m doing the online commentary with Milo tonight on nbc.com. I know some of you enjoyed the commentary Greg Grunberg and I did a few weeks ago. So hopefully you’ll enjoy this one too.
I was really excited when I first read the script for this one. There were a lot of really fun opportunities in it – the structure which started four months ago, and then moved forward – to “three months ago,” “two months ago,” etc. was an interesting storytelling device that I had never done before.
I was also excited to work with Leonard Roberts again, and to tell the story of what happened to DL. He is a nice guy, who is always a pleasure to have on set.
Whenever I first read a script I always let an emotional impression wash over me. I try not to jump to quickly to “how am I going to shoot it?” or “what are the problems here?” I just try to let the emotions speak to me. For me, the emotional arc of the story will determine the visual design choices I make.
This episode felt like it wanted to be simple and elegant. It opens with a bang (Peter and Nathan flying and exploding), and it ends with a bang (Peter being hunted down by Elle and the Haitian.) But in between there was a methodical nature to it, which to me indicated a sense of constant, but gentle pressure. As I began to plan and develop the look and the blocking, I kept thinking of simple camera moves that were always moving in or around, not a lot of coverage (i.e. angles), and a constant sense of rising pressure.
One of the fun things that we do on HEROES, is that we frequently open an episode at the exact minute, or perhaps a minute before the end of the previous episode. In episode 7 Peter re-appeared in the present having abandoned Caitlin there. He screamed “Caitlin” and fell to his knees and we went to commercial. Later, after the commercial break and several scenes, we ended the show on Peter shooting a bolt of energy at Adam. Well, in this one, I had the idea of combining both of those two, previously separated moments, into one. After the “previously on heroes” segment, we come up on a shot of Peter, seen from above. Using a techno-crane, which is a crane with a telescoping arm - a device that can, effectively, both crane and dolly from a fixed platform, I moved through all of the previously seen moments in one unbroken shot. I wanted to do a long take to start the episode, because I thought it would give the viewers a sense of things happening in real time – which is an important theme of the episode.
I re-used a few shots from episode 7 as Adam first comes out, but then shifted to new film which was all shot hand held, to add tension.
After the camera zooms into Peter’s eye, we reprise some film from last year’s finale’, and then we go into the sequence of what happened when Nathan flew away with Peter. I knew this was a very important sequence on many levels. First of all, lots of you fans have had questions about this event since the beginning of this season. I also knew that I had to make the flying look great.
Trust me, flying is hard to do right. This year we’ve done OK a few times, (I liked when West flew outside Claire’s bedroom in the first episode, and when Claire leapt off the Hollywood sign in episode 4.) But in other places, notably episode 3 – we haven’t done flying so well. Bottom line, to even attempt to do flying right is a time consuming, and therefore expensive, proposition. In my experience, first off, you have to design and storyboard the shots very specifically, then you have to have a lot of very specific dialogues with the stunt coordinator and the effects riggers and the visual effects producers. In this case we had to pre-select the pre-existing helicopter backplates of New York, which the actors would be dropped into, and design the shots around them. Different rigging is required for each of the shots, and you have to be organized about this – not just so that you can do it all well, but also so that you can move efficiently through the day – going out of story sequence if needed so that you can shoot all similar rigs in sequence. Then, the actors have to be harnessed in unnatural (i.e. horizontal positions) on a green screen stage, and you have to design specific flying moves for them to perform and specific camera moves that support these performances. Then, you have to blow a crapload of wind on the actors. And then, in editing, you have to cut it altogether real fast so the viewer never gets a real good look at any one shot. When we haven’t done so well, this year, is when we’ve succumbed to budget pressures and said, “Just stand the actors on a box on the blue screen, move the camera around and stay in close-ups.” It just doesn’t work.
I knew I had a shot on this one though, because I had my two best athletes on the floor. A lot of what it takes to make flying right, is for the actors to have good abdominal muscle control. Both Adrian and Milo are strong and have excellent stamina and they were both into it. If you can imagine being hoisted fifteen feet into the air, in a tight fitting harness that squeezes your guts, and then being asked to lay out flat with your (unsupported) legs and arms straight (kind of like doing a “plank” in yoga) and then having to emote and do dialogue at the same time – well then you can get a picture of what we were asking the actors to do.
I hope you feel we did well. There are two specific shots where Milo really impressed me. The first is where Peter pushes away from Nathan and tumbles away into the distance. We had the two actors harnessed separately. When Milo pushed off we, literally, towed him on a line about twenty yards away from Adrian. He enhanced this by tumbling head over heels like a Cirque du Soleil performer. Another one was where (what I call) “Crispy” Nathan is falling and Peter flies up and catches him. We actually had a stunt performer doing Nathan’s role for that shot. (Not so much because Adrian couldn’t do it, and more because of the three hours the makeup took to do) “Stunt” Nathan had to hold himself in a very unnatural position with his arms and legs extended upward. I kept going up on a ladder to adjust his arms and legs. We rolled. Then, as the camera swooped down onto Nathan, Milo was released on a line, which he rode down like a bullet – maybe thirty or forty yards and he smacked into the stuntman like a linebacker hitting a tackling dummy. I jumped out of my chair on set and screamed “Yeah!!!”
I think the whole thing is nicely integrated, with the VFX boys adding mist, ocean, clouds and Nathan’s scorching face.

HEROES – IT’S LIKE A TV SHOW, ONLY BIGGER

MILO AND ADRIAN FLYING – IT’S ALL IN THE ABS BABAY!
In the scene where Angela comes and stands over Nathan’s bed, I had an interesting problem. I didn’t want to show Nathan’s burned body until the very end of the scene – so that the audience sees the extent of the burns at the same moment that the character does. I joked with the other producers later, saying, “Man it takes a lot more shots to NOT show somebody than it does to show them.” And it’s true. If I’d been willing to show Nathan’s burns early in the scene, then I could have just shot a close up of Angela, a close up of Nathan, and maybe one or two wider angles. But as it was, I had to shoot many angles, in which Nathan was either staged to not be seen (like a super low angle from below the bed onto Angela,) draped in shadows (like the super high down, super wide angle from above the bed) or shots where he was seen only in details. (Like the super tight close-ups of Nathan’s eyes and lips.) But, ultimately, this scene was all about Cristine Rose. More so than most scenes, she had to carry all the weight of the first 90% of the scene. Since I wasn’t showing Nathan, only her shocked reaction, tells you the extent of his injuries. Cristine and I talked about how she should feel this gut wrenching emotion, seeing her cherished first born so disfigured, but that she then had to hide her emotions so that she wouldn’t unduly upset him. I love working with Cristine. She’s a pro. She’s happy to be here. And she is an exceptional actor who always makes surprising, yet subtle choices. Having said that, I also want to compliment Adrian. We did four takes of the moment where he rises up and sees himself for the first time. He “discovered” it a little more each take. And, on the fourth, he surprised me with the take that’s in, where he put his hand to his mouth in an almost childlike reaction. I loved it!
Kudos, also, to our special-effects-makeup team from Optic Nerve. This makeup, literally took months to design, with Adrian going to their shop several time to be molded. Every day Adrian had to wear this makeup, it took 3 or 4 hours to apply, and an hour to get off at the end of the day. But it was magnificent. It holds up to really tight close-ups, which is very rare. Both Cristine and Adrian commented on how easy this makeup made their jobs. An actor’s job is, largely, to create honest emotional reactions to imaginary situations. In this case, the makeup took away a lot of the obligation to imagine, because it was so good.

This episode also really introduces Kristen Bell into the show. She had been in a handful of scenes in episode 5, but now she comes in full force. First of all, I love her, and love having her around. She, like most of our cast, comes to play. As a director, on the most fundamental level, you want your cast to come prepared. They need to know their lines, and hit their marks (as Spencer Tracy once said.) And they should have a take on what they’re saying and doing. I know this sounds so obvious, but you’d be shocked how often it’s not the case – where an actor either can’t deal with the technical fundamentals of blocking with crew and camera – or where they really haven’t thought through the psychological underpinnings of their character and why they’re doing what they’re doing in a scene. The more organized the cast and the director are, coming in, the more they can play and invent the scene to maximum benefit. Kristen comes ready and she participates and invents very well with the rest of the cast. Luckily we shot, largely, in order. The first scene I did with her was the long one where Milo awakens in Bob’s office. Tim Kring had described to me how he saw Kristen’s character of Elle. That she had grown up her whole life inside the company, rarely traveling outside of the building and almost never unsupervised – all of which resulted in mal-adjusted social skills. How she had a, kind of, sexualization of her electrical power. And how she responded to everything on a very emotional, almost infantile level. This first scene, was very much one where she was discovering this character. It, I believe, was very different from anything she’s done before. As we progressed through the scene, I kept encouraging her to take more and more chances and be odder with the character. I discovered a sense that the character was very A/B -1/2, meaning, she viewed everything simplistically as something she desired or didn’t desire, and she either got her way or didn’t. So everything is very “want-get,” “want-don’t get,” “don’t want-get”, or “don’t want- don’t get.” Elle appears a very mature sexualized young woman, but she has a child’s perspective on the world. Anyway, after the firsts scene she grabbed a hold of the character and ran with it. Most of her scenes were with Milo in the cell and the two had a good time playing off each other. As I mentioned before, I kept my coverage simple. There are usually only a few shots in each scene and I tried to let the masters play as long as I could wherever I could. Shooting less coverage, ultimately, gave the actors more time to play with each other in the scenes. I hope for good benefit.

Comments
Thanks for doing this blog! I enjoy coming here every week to peek behind the scenes and let my "Heroes time" continue a little longer.
I was excited to read what Tim Kring said about the season so far. Hopefully he doesn't take any fan feedback to an extreme. Although I have had complaints this season, I really love this show. I think the show will hit an equilibrium before long (as long as this strike gets resolved soon). Regardless, I will be watching until there is no more.
One question though, what about Sylar? Last Monday's preview said "What happened to Sylar?" and we didn't get to see that but 5 seconds of what we've already seen. I was a bit confused on that one.
It's great that even though you like to keep it simple there were still so many fantastic shots in this episode! I definitely have to watch it a few more times to comment properly, but yeah...some great shots. Obviously the shot of the pills going down the drain is significant but it was such a quick thing and you made it looks so beautiful.
I also loved all of the focus on the Angela/Heidi interaction. It's all about the touching. I remember last year, people were speculating about Angela's abilities and now everyone is excited because their suspicions are being confirmed.
I really dug the phasing thing too. I can't remember if we got to see the inside of the walls last season. Either way, it was a nice touch.
I'm still curious about where Sylar went, how Matt/Mohinder/Molly (or M3) got together. I found it kind of odd that you had Alejandro and Maya go back four months ago.. when they're new to the show. It was basically the same stuff they've been doing in the past. Maya freaks.. Alejandro looks like he's constipated.. everyone heals. We know what happens with them. I think the time spent on them could've went to the original characters we care about more. I literally fast forwarded their scenes on my DVR. I just don't care.
Not to say that the directing and writing wasn't flawless. It was, because you guys are awesome. I just think that taking the twins back in time was pointless.
I'll keep this short this week (I know, shocking!), but I would, of course, like to throw in a plug for Angela again. As ever, she was amazing and scene-stealing, and if I'm not mistaken, we got a particularly strong hint at her power tonight. So, when is Christine Rose going to be made a regular???
That said, the flying scene? Awesome! I love the way Milo carries himself when Peter is using all of his powers, and those shots (and the hospital as well) were just solid. Keep up the good work.
On to tonight's episode. Overall it did a great job of getting the show back on track and getting us ready for the adreline rush. It stinks that the writers strike is going to steal the momentum that was long in coming.
The good. The pieces fit together very nicely in regards to Nathan, Peter, and Elle. Kristen Bell is a fabulous actor who plays her infantile egomaniac character to perfection.
The bad. I still havent figured out where the mysterious box Peter was carrying came from that the Irish thugs used as leverage against him(the one containing his identity). Its hard to imagine that Peter could hold on to it in the midst of running from the Haitan. I am also having a problem figuring out how being beyond harm also guards against all signs of aging. At what point do you stop aging? Will Claire remain looking 17 for the rest of her life?
The Ugly. I have to agree that the tme spent on the "new heroes" would have been much better spent telling us what happened to Sylar at the end of season 1. Who told miss shape shifter to snatch him? Why? Why doesnt he have his powers now?
And the miscellaneous. Geeze louise did DL get a raw deal! Didnt he learn his lesson about not phasing out when someone is pointing a gun at him from his encounter with Lindeman? I was laughing to myself remembering that an old college professor of mine once told me that "the bane of every great man is a woman that never deserved him in the first place." (True Story).
I am still hopeful that the Adam, Nightmare-man Parkman, first generation of heroes tie-in is going to be a good one. "Save the city from the virus" is too similar to "save it from a bomb" to be the season's glue. IMHO the tie in coupled with the heroes being not as successful as they would like to be in the end is the key for a great transition.
Thanks for taking the time to write this blog. I always look forward to reading it each week.
The good stuff: Nathan and Peter flying across the ocean was awesome. The special fx, the facial expression on both actors, the bond that you know exist between the brothers it's all there. One question though: does Nathan being able to grow his beard so quickly is because he now has Kensei's regeneration power?
Angela manipulating Heidi in the hospital. It was really cruel of her to say something like that about the son who was suffering from burns. But that's Angela for you. Good acting from Christine Rose though although again, Angela makes me angry just thinking about it.
The ok stuff: The Haitian helping Peter when he got to Ireland. Niki and DL story although I can't believe we see another personality coming out of her.
The bad stuff: the wonder twins. I feel sorry for Dania Ramirez because her acting is awesome just like Ali Larter but the character is just not interesting like the others.
Elle. Well, I'm not sure if it's the acting or what but I really don't like the over-the-top personality. Her scene with Peter was annoying to say the least
The Petrelli stuff in here was awesome, and I loved everything between Peter and Nathan and Angela and Heidi (I guess we know what Mrs. P's power is now!)
However I wondered why Sylar was completely left out of the storyline when the promo said we'd find out about him. I know we can fill in the blanks, but I would have loved to see if Bob had anything to do with his treatment and possibly experimenting the "Haitian pills" on him. Shalim and Dania are great actors, don't get me wrong, but I found their backstory unnecessary. Also, what about Molly, Mohinder, and Matt? I thought we were going to see how they decided to all move in together.
All that said, your directing was amazing as always and I love reading your blog. The storyboard and pics are great and I'm still looking forward to the next episode!
Very much enjoyed
I'm quite interested in Adam/Kensei (Kensadam? Adamsei?) so seeing more and more of him was definitely a huge plus!
I do have to echo my fellow posters here though in asking where Sylar was. It's too bad that the promos hyped him up and we didn't find out anything regarding him. I was really looking forward to that.
In the end though, I wanna thank you and the rest of the Heroes team for continuing to make the show something that I look forward to week after week!
Love the blog, never felt a reason to post, but I enjoyed the episode emmensely and just had to say something.
My only problem was with the way DL died, but then, that's probably the intent.
Err, everyone? Besides, we already know what happened to Sylar. He was rescued by Candace and was taken to Mexican jungle.
i thought it was a good epi...not great, and not earth shattering
sorry, but the xfile wonder twins still bring the show to a screeching halt...i really didnt care about their origin
im also not enamored with the plot device of kensei having healing blood
nor did i like the death of dl, which was telegraphed and obvious, especially since he was able to phase a sucker punch, but not a gun pressed to his chest
i would really like kring to turn over head writing duties to someone else, and stay in the exec producer's chair
i really hope that kensei is the brains behind the entire operation...would hate to think that the company was so stupid as to put him in a cell next to peter
oh...and bob must die
the crispy nathan effects were indeed excellent...and really cool that rosenbaum showed up on set...he is the only reason why i continue to watch smallville...now there is a great villian
I don't think finding out who hired Candace to take Sylar to the jungle and the purpose need full flashback. It could just be referred to in the next episode. I think the problem here is NBC marketing monkeys didn't just do a promo for episode 8 but rather for the whole 4 remaining episodes (thus the flashes of Claire running in the beach, HRG awakes looking shocked, etc). People, however, assumes that Sylar will be on this episode.
>> They might explain all this stuff later in the season, but "Four Months Ago" would've been a perfect time to do so and end on a good cliffhanger.
Yeah, but all of the slots for flashback are occupied. The only characters who don't really need flashback here are the twins. And maybe they could have cut down the Elle part of the story. But those oversight themselves are not good enough reason to make one condemn the entire episode.
>> I just miss how great the show was last season.
That kind of statement is just silly especially after you admitted that the only reason you're upset is because Sylar is not in the episode. Ever wonder that it's probably because at this stage, ZQ already has to film "Star Trek" and can't find a time to shoot his part for the episode? Meanwhile, shooting for the episode must go on, so they end up having a "Four Months Ago" without him.
Having said that, I can understand why others are upset with the lack of their favorite characters. I think this episode should have been a two-parter (ie. "Four Months Ago part 1" and "Four Months Ago part 2"). Let's face it, the addition of the new characters reduces the already tight screen time available for the original regulars.
And I hope that you don't forget about Caitlin. I would be a missed opportunity if you didn't save her or expand her character. The show could really use a female without abilities within the central storyline as you have done with HRG, Mohinder and Ando.
Someone said above that they were confused about Peter's box in Ireland and how he ended up with it. The box wasn't Peter's (correct?) Ricky simply took Peter's belongings (the plane ticket, passport, photo, etc... that Adam had given him) when he found Peter and put them in a box and then used the box as leverage to get Peter to help him. The box was really hyped up, I know, but the box wasn't actually something that Peter was carrying around with him. Just the container that Ricky put his items into.
I agree on one point about Sylar. Why was he included in the promo for 4 Months Ago if he wasn't going to be in the episode? I realize he his busy filming Star Trek right now and that's fine. I really like him, but the show doesn't suffer for me without him. But, it was a little irritating to see him in the preview and not in the episode. The other poster may be correct in saying that the promo for 4 Months Ago was really a promo for the rest of Volume 2 and that's fine, but it made it "seem" like he was going to be in the episode.
I think the show is progressing wonderfully. I hate that Tim Kring has taken so much flak from so many of the fans about slow story progression and too many new characters/too many unanswered questions... because that's not how all of us feel. I personally LIKE a lot of unanswered questions. I like mystery. I like trying to figure things out. And while some people feel like they are being strung along... I feel like that is the way the show keeps us coming back... we keep tuning in for the answers. And I understand that you are going to have to introduce new characters from time to time to keep the show fresh and new and evolve new story plots. The twins aren't my favorite storyline, but I have a feeling that by the end of the season, that opinion might change. I know there is a point to them and probably a pretty significant one.
I hate that the strike is continuing. I feel for the writers but I hope things are resolved soon so that the end of volume 2 doesn't have to be the end of season 2. That would be really disappointing.
Anyway, thanks for the awesome blog as always Greg!!! Loved all the info and I'll look forward to next weeks (off to watch your commentary with Milo) :)
~Nicky
However, I think it would have worked better if it had come earlier in the season. As it was, the on media res stuff was more frustrating than tension-building.
It was so awesome seeing DL again; I really wish he wasn't dead! The Nikki-DL-Micah family unit was great; they were so cute together. Getting shot by a skeezy dude in a nightclub at the conclusion of a nice character arc is better than dying off-screen with no explanation, but he's still not around any more! :(
I have a friend who is still convinced it's a comic-book-style fake-out (nobody ever dies for good in comics), but all that blood-spray was pretty convincing to me.
(I agree with the other posters that it seems arbitrary that NOW he fails to phase at the last minute, when he previously managed to miraculously rescue himself from snipers, sucker-punches, etc. And yes, I get that random violence happens, but couldn't have happened to somebody else?)
one thing i would have liked to have seen in the episode was a reveal of adam being kaito's killer, but i can see why they might hold that for later if they're going for some sympathy for our immortal friend.
For example, everyone has already talked about this, but DL dying... are you kidding me? He phases out to avoid a punch that comes out of nowhere, but he can't phase out to avoid a bullet from a gun that he sees coming? Did he suddenly get ridiculously stupid? How does something like that, something that pivotal, make it from idea to script to actual filming and no one stops to say "Hey, why doesn't he just phase out? That gun is really hard to miss." It makes NO sense to me.
I understand if there's a need to kill a character, but don't do it in such an insulting manner to both the character and the viewers watching.
Another example: Peter spends two months in the facility before realizing that he's actually in a prison? And a month goes by talking to Adam before he even tells him his name? It smacks of sloppy writing to me, really sloppy, and I wish... no I pray that someone up there would say "Hey, this doesn't make any sense."
Even though it's a show about people with superpowers, there has to be SOME sense of realism in the character portrayals for us as viewers to buy in to it, and things like this make it really hard. I could list about 18 more examples of these moments where I just go "Hrnh...?" but I really don't want to, because I'm not here rip anyone. At least not a lot.
So... overall, it was a good show. But there are some truly ridiculous moments scattered throughout that just drive me crazy, especially with so many talented people working on this show.
I loved how the mistery concerning Nathan's distorted image in the forst episodes of this season was solved and how you managed to fit Adam in the storyline.
I was sorry you didn't manage to give us an insight into how Molly, Mohinder and Matt became a family, but we got a general idea from the previous episodes. Instead you chose to answer more burning questions (Peter and Nathan's fate, Nathan's distorted face and why his marriage was over, Maja and Alejandro's story, Elle's story, DL's fate) in this episode.
You have done a remarkable job for just a 42 minute episode!
Again, some people complain about the fact that time was given to explain Maja and Alejandro's background. I don't agree. IT was interesting and scary, too. I feel pretty much the same about them as I did last year concerning Nikki/Jessica. I simply couldn't understand what her power really was and what her purpose was in the storyline, but it became cleared later on in the season.
I'm sure it will be the same here, that's why I'm really looking forward to the next three episodes!
I can say that the whole wedding scene with the twins and the flight scene with my brothers from a different mother were very cool.
However, you guys wasted a lot of time in this episode whether it be the second twins scene or any of the multitude of Niki scenes.
The storytelling style you used this week was great, a nice departure from the typically character based story telling to a time based one. I really liked the change of pace it brought.
Another complaint is, besides Peter's story and Niki's story line. We didn't see much else. It would've been neat to see more of the aftermath of the bomb (how would they explain that to the authorities?!). Again, as everyone is echoing, SYLAR! it was a huge mistake on your guys' part to not include one of the shows most beloved and revered villain/anti-hero...whatever! The point is, many were expecting an explanation of how Sylar lost his abilities and if they had a scene with Bob, Sylar, and Candice...that would've rocked!
Another thing I loved can be summed up in two words: David Anders! He is my favourite character this season and h has such this charming and yet manipulative way to him that I can never quite understand what his true motivations may be. Which made this whole escape thing and "saving the world" thing making me wonder if he's showing Peter his full deck or if he's simply using Peter as a weapon as he did with Maury Parkman.
That brings me to my final (I swear!) point. This episode cut corners! When Elle shocked Adam, I so wanted there to be some sort of fight. Tag team match! And even though this show is a character based drama, you could've tossed us (the fans) a bone and made that scene a tad longer to include a better fight.
All in all, I felt this episode was an improvement above the others this season. Story wise I was dissapointed that you guys focused on DL and Niki and not Sylar!
Maybe you can make it up to us and just give Sylar his abilities back so he can kill Alejondro and fall in love with his dominican princess
Maylar will come to be!!!!!
I wish they had kept DL and dumped the twins. They add nothing to the storyline, in fact they weakened the show. Their story is always the same and goes nowhere.
If the next shows are as great as this, minus those boring twins, we can say Heroes is back on track.
Kristin Bell though was great in her character.
Am I the only one having trouble buying that a woman would get married, and leave her wedding reception with her ex-boyfried, and no one would see them wander off together?
Wouldn't it make more sense for her to have an affair at an event where everyone WASN'T focused on her?
Sigh....
Have a great week!
"I do not like Bob. I do not like Bob indeed. And just when I think I might have a handle on what is going on, that sadist Tim Kring does a juke dance on my quivering brain again !!! I do believe his purpose with this show is to remind me each week that he is a story telling God and that I should grovel and praise his presence in my meager existence. AND THE HAITIAN DUDE !!!"
Exactly. I am wondering about these last three episodes though. Is the last going to wrap up this storyline, like a finale? Or is it going to be open? I just really hope that things don't get rushed to have a pretty conclusion because of the strike. Let's all just make peace, give the writers the money they deserve, and get back to doing and enjoying what we love. Okay?
Kind of a big continuity error there.... Um, oops? Apparently the writers/costume designers went on strike early.
I almost turned off the TV when Niki developed yet *another* alter-ego.
And what's with promising us, in the preview, to find out what happened to Sylar, and then not showing us?
Heroes is *dragging* this season. I find myself wishing to see more of Bob than the other characters, and that's just bad. I hope the Kensei/Adam plotline goes places quickly, but I can't imagine how to tell a really big story without it feeling rushed now.
After watching "Out of Time" and "4 Months Ago," I've come to the conclusion that I enjoy the show a lot more when Hiro and Peter are back in the main action. There were lots of good moments and scenes before, but having these guys tie everything together gives the show a cohesiveness, makes it more than the sum of its parts. It makes Heroes feel like Heroes, if you know what I mean.
Oh, and Peter/Elle was HOT.
Can't wait for next week!
Oh, Greg, you're killing me.
Loved the Adrian/Milo scenes. LOVED THEM.
*faints*
I wonder if I'm the only one that likes the twins' story. The only issue I had with their scene is we still haven't found out what exactly their powers are doing and why. So I will wait til next week...I wonder if Mr. Bennett will die.
I'd like to thank Tim Kring for what he said on the article
http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20158840,00.html
That was very impressive and it was done in such an elegant way.
Related to the 8th episode, Kris Kramer wrote the key points in this post, again. I agree with the entire comments.
Adding more to them, it seems that the story of the twins was completely unnecessary. It doesn't explain anything or adds anything to the story. If you watch the episode without the twins segments, you'll realize that it doesn't affect the storyline of that episode or the general one.
It could have used that time to tell the story of other characters like Parkman and Mohinder renting a place and taking Molly with them.
As well as the alliance with Noah to go after The Company.
The show really needs the life that was never there in the beginning. It was an improvement but there still remains to see the next episodes.
One way to do this is by getting rid of some characters, specially the ones that add nothing to the story while keeping the ones that
are vital part of it. Example, keep Sylar (I can't stand the character) but he is vital part of it.
If you get rid of:
- One of the twins, thus still having the change of developing one of them (both are annoying on scene)
- Sparky (electricity chick..I don't even care to remember the character's name)
- Caitlin (What was her role again?)
- West
It was good to see sparks of what made this show an awesome show in the first season.
The problems I have are with the script I guess, not just this
one but the general direction, we get a shorter "volume" by design
yes it doesn't seem to move faster just slower, many new characters
who'm I have entirely failed to connect with except possibly Adam/Kensei,
in no small part due to David Anders I'm sure (and I'm a man) - Kristen
Bell is generally good but we haven't really seen enough of her to get past
the annoying psychopath stage and for me the twins have failed to be anything
but annoying since they seem to run in place doing the same things over and over,
yes we get it she kills people and its bad. Anyway, good shot you got of
Hayden there, you made her look tall! *g* (Even if she is standing out of focus)
Oh, and enough of the gender discrimination, if you are going to show
topless men, show topless women as well!
'4 months ago'was well-built.Not really surprising but interesting.
Like most of the people, i tried but just can't get interested in the twins story: Sure, she killed a LOT of people...But not willingly,it was an accident! I mean, it has much less impact than when Sylar kills, in his sexy predatory way: AND with humor! ('It is usually the part when ppl start screaming ':-)I need more humor, and cynism and Sylar is in pole position for that.
Speaking of him!!!!! What? Zachary was only available for a few episodes in this half-season and you bury him in a second-hand story with nothing really happening, spending most of his time in a car...Let me tell you:BAD CHOICE! I guess we will at last, see some typical (or not) Sylar action but we have only 3 zodes left anyway: not enough for this strong character.
I can't buy Elle too. She's acting like a femme fatale from 1940 with Peter.Turn the electricity into a cigarette, you'll see. It's too weird. Not her sadism, but the way she's speaking or moving. Its like: she's an actor playing an actor who is acting...It's FAKE.
Even when she's starting to reveal herself'i never went swimming..blabla' it's not natural at all...I don't know..Ok: i'm french, maybe i don't perceive the things the same...
In french forums, they disliked the way DL died: they think it's so stupid, after NOT dying from Linderman bullets, he dies from a small gangster's gun for nothing..I don't agree, in fact,i do think it's a great idea: Showing how life is nothing, how you can lose it without warnings, being a hero or not, if taken off guard only for a few seconds. It takes nothing to make a hero fall.Une pichenette. It's an important idea to let ppl realise that in fact!
Thanks again for the great show, i really hope the strike will lead to a resolution, as soon as possible, though im totally with the strickers! (do you say strickers in english?)I myself will strike soon:-)
And also since he came in contact with Adam, does this mean he's immortal too or if not immortal , will he age slowly? If yes, then how many more women are you gonna hook up with him?
Every women who will come into his life will age and die eventually while he will remain young and alive. eeeh. Have the writers thought about that one? He is basically doomed when it comes to relationships. Imagine, him looking young and then his wife or gf is 60 years old.lol
Peter now has so many different powers that it is virtually impossible for him to use them all or how to logically decide which one to use (e.g. does he phase through a wall when he could melt it ala Ted or liquify it). It was cool to see him use invisibility again (my personal favorite).
BTW Any word on Claud Raines. It seems that when he walked out the door he really walked out the door.
I found myself intrigued by the Peter-Elle-Adam storyline. Interesting dynamics between those three and great chemistry between Milo and Kristen and Milo and David. But my favorite part was the Petrelli brothers backstory. I'm really missing their interacting this season.
but I really dont like Maya e Alejandro! Her power is so lame!! pliz kill them!!
Now for the Good:
- The Peter and Nathan dynamics will amazing... Not to mention the special effect work that was put into the flight and explosion...
- The interaction between Peter and Elle was head on, and had me wanting more...
- The true introduction of Adam!!!!
Now for the bad:
- In the commercials, we were told what happened to Sylar? Why was he Synapped... Who took his powers... Why was Candance authorized to do so....
- How did Mohinder, Matt and Molly actually become to meet...
- Who put the box in the crate... Honestly I didn't see The Haitian put it in the crate...
- Ugh the twins, although good acting... They add nothing to the story at this point... Please kill them.... (I know i sound so harsh... :()
- Oh man, another personality for Nikki... -_-
- Too many continuity errors... Nathan growing his beard quick, etc...
- And probally worst of all... The way DL died... Am I the only one disappointed on the way DL died? He becomes a hero, only to be gunned down like a poor sap... And to think, I actually liked his character in this episode... A fire man suited him... I guess all good deeds don't come unpunished.. I hope he comes back one day... It would of been better if he died of complications in the hospital... At lease than, he would of died more heroically... Saving his wife from Linderman... -_-
I'm sorry Greg, you did a really great job directing this episode... And I love the show, but this was just too much to grasp... Too many questions left unanswered...But I have a great feeling about Exodus!!!! :)
Julie from France
Thankfully this episode is a step towards improvement. It was nice to see all of the original characters reunited on screen at Kirby plaza and the fallout from Nathan and Peter's fireworks in the sky. Despite this, there are still some misfirings. Elle, for example was annoying and unnecessary in this episode. She should have been left out so we can find out what happened to Sylar and Matt/Mohinder after the incident. The twins were not bad but after 7 episodes of watching them crying black oil, it's a case of too much. And oh God, next week we have to see West and Claire. Again.
Why the hell does Peter have to get shirtless in every freaking episode?
the 2 season is amazing, i loove it!
thanks you to show us milo quasi naked it s a reeal pleasure :p
il est magnifique
Melanie(nanimely@hotmail.com)
kiss from Paris, when will you come back here :( ?
But please don't kill off HRG. It would crush my poor heart into a gazillion tiny pieces.
Apart from that enormous fear I have- I love the show. Thank you.
My only concern is about the last minute rewrite of Ep 11. Hopefully the rewrite is not too different from the original ending they had planned.
You guys are making an incredible job on 'Heroes' I must congratulate you and the whole team... I don't watch TV a lot but this show is the only one I can't miss, it's kinda philosophic (sp?) I just love it.
By the way, this episode was just perfect, and Elle - performed by amazing Kristen Bell - is wonderful !
Despite the mediocre feedback this season, I have been a HUGE fan of every episode. And I truly hope the writer's strike doesn't keep you all from moving forward with the rest of this stellar season. I can't live without guys! I dream about Sylar every night!
Keep up the amazing work. I'm so thankful for your blog!
It was beautiful.
This show needs more Nathan doing heroic stuff.:)
One of the best and most original blog of "Heroes"!

*I know I might get attacked for this, but I wish Sylar had not made it to the 2nd season. How long can his story possibly go on?? He likes to kill people. Steal their powers sometimes. That's about it. I'd say one season is enough.
If it makes you feel any better, as much as I like Maya y Alejandro, I can't see how their storyline could last more than 1 season.
Also, I fear that Peter is simply getting TOO powerful. Now he presumedly has the Haitian's abilities, so he could dampen the powers of any enemies. And then use pretty much any ability that's ever been on the show. A Rogue-like limited time use of powers would have been better than a permanent storage of powers. The show could get boring if Peter can do EVERYTHING.
Haha this is gonna be a long one; I haven't really commented on anything, so I have SO much built up.
*Mama Petrelli - some kind of telepathy/mind control? That's my guess. In the 'future', did she 'make' Peter remember things?
*Speaking of Peter remembering things, um, healing power does NOT equal regaining memory. Especially since the Haitian's power is mental, and cellular regeneration is physical
*West = devil.
*Niki - I'm pretty sure that's not how Multiple Personality Disorder (more appropriately, Dissociative Identity Disorder) works. You don't just get a new personality cuz one went away. And Gina seems... well, lame, compared to Jessica.
*Sad to see D.L. go, especially like that. Strange, isn't it, the 3 main characters not to make it to season 2 (Simone, Isaac, and D.L.) are all minority characters. Hmm...
* I agree with all who say "save New York from virus" is WAYYY too similar to "save New York from nuclear explosion". Seriously, every season can't involve time travel to learn about ANOTHER catastrophe to save New York from.
*As for new characters, the show HAS to have new characters or it would really get old. Some characters' storylines just can't last as long as others'. (i.e. Sylar; Maya y Alejandro, etc.)
People are tired of the twins because their plotline is so repetitive, plus their scenes always include a showcasing of their powers. This would be more necessary if they were involved with the storyline (like when Hiro would teleport or when Sylar would steal someone's power), but this is more like when Claire would have strange, clumsy moments that only served to show us that she can heal. A lot of people were annoyed and said, "We GET it already!" The twins also been traveling for so long without any elaborate character development. That might change in the future but for now, everyone is bored with their storyline because it is both repetitive and static, much like Hiro's and Peter's storylines were until now. I do think that the twins will become important to the main plot, but they might get killed off since the majority of the fans are so dissatisfied with them.
That all said, I agree with you that Peter is getting too powerful now. I'm still confused as to how he managed to tap into D.L.'s power when we never saw Peter's empathy work that way before.
What the? The boring twins non-popularity is not because of their color (I can't believe people actually still believe that kind of thing in this day and age) but because their storyline is repetitive and boring. No one has said anything unpleasant about Monica because her character is interesting. Similarly, Claire and West gets more heat than the twins because they are BORING and CREEP-TASTIC. And wow, they are actually white.
I think the problem here is that the writers tried to introduce too many new characters and make them regulars immediately. This should never be the case. New characters should start out as supporting so the audiences can get used to them instead of being forced to accept them. Otherwise the original regulars get to do nothing and have to sit around while the new characters catch up with them.
"*As for new characters, the show HAS to have new characters or it would really get old"
"Star Trek", "The X-Files", "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", "Stargate", etc all features the same characters throughout their 5-god knows how many seasons and yet they are successful and never got old. It's not a matter of having new characters. It's about using your characters in interesting ways and improving upon their personalities. With the show having so many regulars, I'm sure they'll never run out of character development for these characters. I mean each one probably don't get more than one hour of screen time per season.
Hayden there, you made her look tall! *g* (Even if she is standing out of focus)"
Hang on, where was she in this episode? (Apart from the bit of season finale footage.)
and how about giving my mohinder a love interest instead. he needs some loving too you know. i don't understand why peter gets all the girls.
as a real life dominican living in the D.R. i found it offensive you made us look like cuba, or, somewhere else where they have vintage well kept cars :P
oh well
You know what ? This episode should have been THE 1st OF SEASON 2, it just rocks ! I loved it.
The storyline of the first 6-7 episodes was not that interesting, too many boring stories/characters (the twins, West, the Irish girlfriend...)
You guys have done a great job with this episode !
- The only thing I don't like about it is the twins story... (can't help it, I don't like Maya)
+ The electric blond is a very interesting and promising character, I like her craziness !
Anshine from France.
Angela Petrelli : I loved this mysterious, disturbing, but also loving mother, I'm longing to know what is her ability.
