ANGELS & MONSTERS
NOTICE: A SPOILER WARNING HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THIS BLOG
Tonight’s episode was written by Adam Armus and Kay Foster and was directed by Anthony Hemingway.
Anthony is a first-time HEROES director. He came to us recommended by NBC. I watched an excellent BATTLESTAR GALACTICA episode he directed (which is a favorite of many in our writing staff.) He was an assistant director on THE WIRE which is the show he moved up to director on… he directed several episodes of that as well as ER and CSI: NY. Immediately after finishing his HEROES episode, Anthony got a gig directing a movie for George Lucas. He is currently in Pre-Production on the Lucasfilm movie RED TAILS. I think he did an excellent job here. He was a big fan of the show and had seen all the episodes. Whenever someone is new on the show, I get a little nervous, and maybe spend a little too much energy going over and over the numerous cinematic styles and techniques we use. I make lots of suggestions and am kind of opinionated. Different people deal with this in different ways. Anthony was very mellow with me and kept listening and nodding and saying, “Got it. No problem.” He tried to assure me he had it under control – and after watching him shoot for a couple of days I was confident that he did. He did what we do well – mixing up big close-ups with wide-wide graphic shots, moving the camera effectively and – most importantly – accurately locking into the emotions of the characters.
In some ways this was a big THE WIRE reunion – Jamie Hector had already been on the show for several weeks and now Andre Royo also came aboard as Stephen Canfield - The Vortex Man.
As always, everything springs from the script. The script is the soil that the actors, the director and the production team plant their ideas in. In this case I think Adam and Kay wrote a complex and rich script with a lot of scope and emotion.
Subjectivity part one: It’s always the case – but especially true on HEROES that ideas are very subjective. First something is written in the script (in this case I’m referencing the idea that a character creates a black-hole-like vortex that matter is sucked into.) At a script level, this idea serves a very pragmatic goal. Noah Bennet has stated that he plans to discover Sylar’s weakness and kill him. But how do you kill an invulnerable super-killer? The matter-sucking vortex becomes a simple answer.
But now, all of us have to visualize this event and figure out how to design the visual effect and shoot the scenes in such a way that support the effect. A day into the prep our whole team sat down and had a long meeting about what this vortex would look like. The writer’s started with their concept and then the director and the rest of us jumped in with our own opinions – expanding, enhancing and sometimes being in conflict with each other. At the end of that meeting – based on talking it out aloud – we all were in general agreement about what this vortex would be. The art department and the visual effects team would sketch up some drawings.
A couple of days later we met again and the drawings were laid out. A frequent response upon viewing these was: “What is this!?” “This isn’t what we talked about?!” A funny thing in this business is that, in discussing any abstract idea – whether it be a black-hole-vortex or a living-dead reptilian monster – each person has a different picture in their head. These various mental-picture-images can all agree with one verbal description and still be wildly different from each other.
After viewing and discussing the concept art, we all finally agreed upon an one art drawing of what vortex we liked best. But even then we were not finished. see, the final version would live as a moving live action element, not as a single frame upon a piece of paper. So, the next step was to get examples from other movies where things like this had been done. I suggested referencing the third HARRY POTTER movie when the death eaters sucked away at Harry Potter’s soul. Adam and Kay suggested a movie from the 80’s called: THE ARRIVAL – where a very similar event occurred. I think it was Jeph Loeb who brought up JUMANJI – when, at the end, the whole Jumanji world was sucked back into the book. I personally thought this was the best reference. In JUMANJI everything was dissipated into tiny particles of matter and then sucked down as if down a whirlpool. But then financial reality came to bear. A JUMAJI-like technique would require numerous 3-D objects to be created so that they could be digitally destroyed. The limited amount of time in postproduction was also a factor. Also, the director’s initial shot list included 30 to 40 cuts of this event. This also caused a general hue and cry and we finally agreed that we would stick to a 2-D vortex and that we would limit the total number of shots where the vortex was seen to about 25.
For the key sequence, to support the idea that the vortex would be in danger of sucking 3 of our main cast members into oblivion - we agreed the actors would all be hung on rigs and wind machines would be blown and the camera would be shaken and hopefully that would all work out.
In post, though, we were disappointed with the first few rounds of the vortex effect. It just wasn’t enough. We added digital objects flowing thorough the foreground of all the actors close-ups - even when there wasn’t a black hole visible. We even added the idea of the floorboards being ripped up digitally. When all was said and done I think we have about 65 visual effects.
And, even after I must confess that I'm not sure we got the best effect imaginable for this event. Just the best one we could afford in the time we had. That is the nature of TV, and even though HEROES is big TV - time and money are still our masters. Having said that, though, the story is of the Vortex is well told and what is happening is clear. That, in and of itself, is huge! So it's all good.
Subjectivity pt 2: The cocoons – I won’t go into as much detail as I did on the last piece – but this was an equally subjective concept. The writers informed us that Suresh was going to capture and entomb a number of people in cocoons on the walls and ceilings of his loft. Again numerous questions practical and conceptual immediately came up... What do these cocoons look like? Are they clear and luminous? Fibrous and thick? Viscous and bloody? Slimy? Dry? How do they function? (Both within the story and practically.) Can we hang our actors in them safely? How long will it take to rig the actors into them? What about stunt men/women? What about mannequins? How to rig them safely? How many are there? How do we photograph them? How can we see the actors in them and still feel like they’re trapped? How long will it take to make them once they are designed? How much will they cost? These questions went on and on while the clock of production deadline ticked louder and louder. In the end - all this is well and good - but the biggest question on everyone’s minds was never asked or answered – How and from where does Suresh make the goo that makes up the cocoon material???
Another note - It was fun for me to see Jack Coleman and Zach Quinto working together as partners. There is a short scene where they’re driving in the car talking and arguing over the radio. This scene was out of the episode for a while, because the early cuts were long time-wise – but in the end Tim Kring really wanted it in. He felt strongly that these little character moments add as much as any big action or special effects. So we found the time by trimming other things - little scenes within the episode.
The last thing I would like to comment on is the scene where Hiro kills Ando in the bar. I really liked this scene in the script. I like Hiro and Ando. And this really comes out of nowhere in a great way. What always blows me away about HEROES is that this kind of a scene - that would usually end any other show – It’s a big “What the f#@*?!?!?!" That would be a great “TO BE CONTINUED” moment on any show! But Nooooo…. Not here. Here it’s just the end of act 4. We still had to introduce 2 new villains, kill half our cast and paralyze Cristine Rose. Now that’s a real what-the f#@*?!?!?!
And now onto the pictures....

What's the collage?
I'd also like to say that I'm loving the Nathan/Tracy relationship, and how they're treating each other with respect, equality, and open communication. Coolness. I still miss Heidi, though. I feel like that storyline hasn't really had any closure.
However: WTF? Hiro killed Ando? That's really screwed up. He didn't even know who those guys were.
Overall, though, I am LOVING this season. Awesome.
;)
Great episode! Interesting twists... Am I guessing right that Mr. Petrelli wants Adam's healing blood? I really like Sylar's character development thus far, too.
Sylar saved Claire's life.
THE ANGST THAT WILL ENSUE. :D
Loving the darkness this season, especially with Mohinder. I was going to laugh if he picked up a drug habit to go with his weird ... back thing, but then he picked up a drug dealer instead....
Poor Maya. It sucks when you only attract creepy nerds. :/
And Hiro killed Ando? I mean, I know this is Heroes, and no one stays dead forever, but Christ!
And I think I'm going to absolute love Mr. Petrelli, haha. ;)
Michael, it's come out in a few places, if not specifically on the show, that the S2 virus took away all of Sylar's abilities except the TK and his own "how things work" power. That, of course, leaves us to wonder where he picks the radiation back up before he blows up Costa Verde.
Huge WTF to Hiro stabbing Ando. There must be more to that then what appears.
I loved that Maya didn’t loose control when she saw the blood and I liked that she tried to help that man. However: pleasepleaseplease before you kill her give her story some closure! There’s no way she could have forgotten about Alejandro and what Sylar did!
This should be one pissed off woman! She’s been used and badly treated by two men she cared about! She’s got such a powerful ability, I want her to use it! I hope she and others escape and she gets the revenge she deserves, on Mo but mostly “Gabriel.” (I hope you don’t kill her because of fan pandering, that would be disgusting! I’d rather she work for the Company, not die to add angst to Mohinder’s story. Originally she was meant to die saving the whole world, that sort of ending has pathos and I could handle that.)
She’s a regular, treat her like one!
Tam, your weekly Maya defender ;)
this season has been AMAAZING so far. looks like it is sooo fun to work with everyone, if you ever need a set photographer i would be on a plane yesterday.. okay who are we kidding, id be on a plane yesterday to lick your floors clean for free.
I wish y'all would give your audience more credit in terms of what we will remember/care about and what you can sacrifice. Being married with kids is actually a pretty huge deal in determining who a person is. I sort of feel like the character of Nathan is ruined.
On a slightly dif. note: as a far-away fan, may I suggest some things?
1. Please, give us back the good old Mohinder, the brave, un-special scientist always willing to illuminate us with his wistful voiceovers! This "fly" storyline is a bit too much of a cliche. He deserves a much better one!
2. Why hasn't Peter ever used the Haitian's power? It's one of the handiest things he could use! BTW - Peter has so many powers... please consider them all when he's stuck at choice.
3. The mortal-life based drama from S1 is still missing. You don't need the larger-than-life subplots (which ARE too many) to preserve the depth of the show.
4. No more futures, no more apocalypses, pleeeease! Been there, done that, don't you think? And the futures never get their explanation... Better stick to the present.
To end with - I believe in Heroes!!!
Okay, I have to say the vortex effect was great though.
I loved the Maury/Arthur reveal at the end - this is going to get messy! I already adore the energy between Milo, Cristine and Adrian, and I can't wait to see the amazing Robert F shake up that dynamic.
Thanks again for the great blog, and for the photos of your fantastic cast. They seem to be very generous in terms of fan-service, which is great, but I think Jack Coleman's fantastic blog should have it's own website, like yours. He's too good for TWoP - that place is a snake-pit of negativity. Ugh. I can't visit it anymore.
This season is a real treat :)
HRG/Sylar duo is absolutely wonderful:These 2 guys are the most subtle and clever ones of the show(though killers!).I guess they will respect each other later on in a way or another. After all, in The Future, Gaby's child is called Noah!
The scene with Adam in the cemetary was really funny:) At last, Hiro was funny, thanks to Adam. I'm vey happy to see Adam back and i hope he'll stay : he's very clever and can lead too; which is interesting.Recruited by force in 'Pineheast'he will have to manage cunningly(?) to get through.
I like this whole new company idea, led by a moribond man which seems very evil and still very powerful!gniark gniark!
Maybe Momo is turned into a limaçon (dunno the name in english) because the writers want to kill him and they need the watchers to like him less and less...Poor Momo: Well, one great thing he does: he puts Maya inside goo, or cocoon, so she can't whine anymore:)
Maury is back: yesss! and 'top cherry on the cake' (french expression)is played by MMacDowell, who is a great actor!
I suppose Matt is still following Miss Turtle.which will lead him to the Speedster! (Reminds me of a Fable: 'the tortoise and the Hare' from Jean De La Fontaine) Nathan is subtlely played by Adrian as usual. Strangely it's been like 3 épisodes that he's not dead/badly hurt? how comes? Nathan tends to die a lot, poor thing...Reminds me of the guy from South Park who always dies:)but Adrian plays his character with a lot of care,as Nathan is the closest character of a 'real' human, in his reactions and ways of dealing, except with its faith crisis! well, saw from here in France I mean ;) Though we know now that his visions were provoked by Maury.
Peter is out of control (well, not anymore) and Mama Petrelli is worried, but we are never sure what really bothers her deep inside?
Hiro surely did stop time, put fake blood on Ando and basta...
What is really interesting this season is the fact that our DNA tagged guys get more and more grey.Self-assurance and barriers are getting blurry and a lot of them are losing their balance and convictions...
But... as much as I am loving this season... step back and just re-read your own blog posting from last week. Just read it and think about it. Does it sound in the least bit coherent to you? Think about Tim Kring insisting on leaving the HRG/Sylar car ride scene in, and what that means. It was one of the most welcome scenes in the episode - small human interactions. Gone are the days of "ordinary people with extraordinary abilities" - now it's just nonstop effects-driven soap opera. Granted, I love it more than Oprah loves fried chicken, but still - not every single lesson that could have been learned from the audience reaction to Season 2 was learned. I have to agree with the poster (from last week's blog?) that begs you to hire Bryan Fuller back to write JUST ONE MORE EPISODE. I'm sure that union and network rules will make it difficult, but he seems to have been the only member of the writing staff who would create believable, lovable, relatable characters with sparkling dialogue. You all are doing an awesome job, but that lightness - that wit - seems to be long gone, and that's a shame when you've got goofballs like Zachary Quinto and Adrian Pasdar ready to dispense with the funny.
Still - I'm a huge fan. Hooray for Arthur Petrelli (and brilliant casting on that). Hooray for Andre Royo and Jamie Hector on the cast, even temporarily. Hooray for happy Mondays. Keep up the great work and thank you for all you've done.
1. ppl have already commented on that, but what about Sylar's super hearing?! You should write down each characters' powers infront of the writers in case you forget...
2. Why doesn't Hiro just go back in time to the bar and see where Adam went insted of searching an alley for him?
3. I thought this was a relatively weak episode(this season)... I think you're making the mistake they made in Lost in season 2 and the beginning of season 3, by intoducing alot of characters and losing focus in some episodes. You can include all, but still some guys and gals need to be the main focus - Peter has to be in the episode for more than 30 seconds. Same goes for Parkman.
Other than that, Real nice work this season, Loving the story line and where it seems to be going
They REMEMBERED that Sylar had the hearing ability from the garage woman.
That's the main reason why Sylar knew that HRG was trying to ask Vortex guy to kill him isn't it?
Their main intention is to let audiences go "but didn't HRG know that Sylar have the super hearing ability?"
Well...he DIDN'T KNOW! Sylar was travelling with Mohinder back in the first season.
That's the catch you see?
Great work on this episode. As with the others, my mind was boggled when Hiro killed Ando without any hestitation...and my heart pumped 4 times faster when I heard the words "Mr Petrelli" before the end credits.
Absolute cliffhanger for a casual viewer of Heroes like me.
-Mr Round
Clever enough to have taken away all of Sylar's powers from S1, but failing to mention so on the show. It's stated several places on the internet and in magazines.
Writers... please stop giving legitimate reasons for your fans to get defensive for you. Many of us are having a hard time continuously giving you excuses.
I’m in agreement with all the Maya comments, but it’s really going to be Adam at this point that’s the deal breaker. (Re: Spoilers from Kristin) I need a better reason than ‘to show A. Petrelli is a Bad Man’ to lose a character with as much potential as Adam.
It seems like you're either related to the Petrellis, or you get minimal screentime, messed-up characterization and an unsatisfying and ridiculous storyline.
I will always be grateful for the fun times this show has given me, but they aren't coming back, are they?
I'm disapointed because it is one of the better actor of the show. You'll miss something because the character has a lot of potential.
Well, I liked this episode, great storyline for HRG, Sylar and Claire indead, Mohinder's isn't good at all, that's a little bit boring...
By the way, where is Monica Dawson?
Cinnamon
And, you booted out Elle, and left Maya... Big No No...
I'm sorry but I'm still far from convinced,
Holla Back! Anyone?
tim really messed the show up . Heroes SUCKS and i'm no longer watching.
Heroes adalah serial favorit saya...nomor 1....!!!
tapi ada cukup banyak hal yang menjanggal.... khususnya, jika Lindarman hanya ilusi dari MAury, maka siapa yang menyembuhkan Nathan???? ANEH....
But...overall..saya masih sangat antusias terhadap serial ini, meski terjadi penurunan rating....
"This also caused a general hue and cry..."
Shouldn't this expression be "hew and cry"?
I know, I'm picky.
I'd really like to see if Sylar still has his powers or not? or will he encounter another precog painter and nuclear man in the next few years?
Can't wait to see how Ando survives, and I'm glad you didn't pull a fast one and make Eric behind Lindy. I knew from the moment MM stepped onscreen that it had to be Maury behind it. (see Grunny's Myspace if you don't believe me.)
Why keep bringin in new characters?
Why do you all insist on not seeign others characters plots all the way through?
Maya - You should have NEVER continued her character. She sucks, plain and simple. And why all of a sudden is her English perfect? Stupid writing and no one cares what her story arc is. Kill her
Mohinder - OK I can see him testing the drug on himslef, but turning him into a spider/fly? Why didnt you jsut call Jeff Goldblum or whatever his name is to play the part, same idea.
Peter, Sylar, The petrelli's - So now everyone is related? At least there story line KIND OF remains in tact.
Hiro - Can you guys write more stupid dialog to make him sound even dumber than he does already? The guy went to past Japan, found love, did a whole bunch of serious stuff, lef tthe girl he lvoes there, comes back and is all happy, "FRYING MAN" hiro again? Stupid dialog, cant YOU even see it?
Seriously Greg, you guys are dumbing it down now way too much.
try writing serious again and remember your losing your fans if you think were stupid enough not to notice all of your and the prod crews inconsistences

I JUST THINK THE KILLING AND COME BACK FROM THE DEAD IS HAPPENING TOO MUCH! PEOPLE WITH OR W/OUT POWERS ARE POPPING UP LIKE WEEDS!!!!
WE ALL KNOW THAT WAS NOT ANDO LAST SCENE. HE WILL BE COMING BACK AND SOON...
LOOK HOW MANY TIMES THE PETRELLI FAMILY-ALONE- KEEP COMING BACK- AND THEY'RE KILLING EACHOTHER. HMMMM...PETER WHERE'D YOU HIDE THE COP? DOESN'T ANYONE BESIDES THE TURTLE KNOW HOW TO GET THE COP OUTTA AFRICA?
AND MY MY MY MAYA, MEXICO OR DA BRONX GURL... PICK IT 'N' STICK WIT IT!!! YIKES!
THAT'S ANOTHER REASON WHY THE HIRO/ANDO THING SHOULD OF NEVER TAKEN PLACE. JUST LET US HAVE ONE, ONE PURE SOUL. TO RESTORE FAITH, TRUST, HONOR AND HOPE IN MANKIND.
YA BUILT SOME STRONG CHARACTERS WITH OUTSTANDING IDENTITIES AND UNIQUE SENSES AND/OR POWERS. DON'T LET IT BECOME SO EASY AND COMMON FOR EVERYONE TO HAVE ANY POWER THEY WANT...MUSHMUSHMUSH
I MEAN...
PRESENT PETER'S HAVING DRINKS AND DEEP CONVERSATIONS WITH HIMSELF 4 YRS FROM NOW(SCAR PETE) AND buying shots for himself HIMSELF AT 21 YRS OLD AND PETER AT AGE 65 IS IN THE BATHROOM FUSHING the toliet WITH HIS MIND.
WHEN IS HE SUPPOSE TO HAVE TIME TO "SAVE THE WORLD" HE HAS TOO MANY FAMILY ISSUES FO-REEEAAALLL?
I'M MAKING T-SHIRTS
(FRONT)
"ANDO LIVES" "ALL PETERS LIVE"
(BACK)
"BUT THE CHEERLEADER LIVES 4EVER"
Daphne and Matt relationship is more distrubing than Dr. Suresh's back,
its like watching a father flirting with his daughter.
I thought Daphne supposed to hook up with Hiro or Ando.
I went back to an older entry because I didn't want to stir up a fuss in this week's thread. But, I'd like to invite Mr. Beeman to do an interview for Racialicious regarding the series' characters of color and their progression through the series.
Racialicious was founded by Carmen Van Kerckhove, co-founder and president of New Demographic, a diversity education firm. Her perspectives on race and diversity have been featured on CNN, MSNBC, NPR, USA Today, and The New York Times. The site and its' multiple contributors look at a variety of issues regarding the intersection of race and pop culture. And with such a diverse cast, Heroes certainly fits the bill.
I'll be honest: the show has come under some criticism this year. I want to invite Mr. Beeman to respond to it, since several of Racialicious' readers are already fan of the program.
Thank you for your time. I can be reached at artgsd@hotmail.com to set up further contact. Take care and best of luck the rest of the season.
Regards,
Arturo
