“THE ECLIPSE - PART 1”
Tonight’s episode was co-written by Aron Eli Coleite and Joe Pokaski, and was directed by your humble servant – me!
One of my duties as executive producer is to sometimes drop in quite suddenly to episodes that I wasn’t planning to direct. Originally Sergio Mimica-Gezzan (who directed the third episode of this season) was going to do this one. But he dropped out just a couple of weeks before, and I had to drop in.
Directorally I am happy with this episode. I feel it has drive and urgency. I’m happy with the performances and with the way it looks. I think Wendy and Lisa did awesome work with the music and Stargate did great with the visual effects. I also want to tip my hat to my editor Lois Blumenthal. She has been an assistant editor on HEROES since the beginning but we recently moved her up to editor. This is her first credit as a full editor and I think she did a great job. One of the things that is so important as a director is that when your editor puts the film together for the first time it at least adequately expresses what you had in mind. If you’re lucky you get pleasantly surprised. Well Lois did a great job and right from the first cut, posting this episode was an easy experience.
In the end, as always, you fans will decide what you think of the episode.
Joe and Aron aren’t usually a writing team but they co-wrote this week’s and next week’s episodes which are called THE ECLIPSE – PART I and THE ECLIPSE – PART II. They were so excited about these scripts and told me “It’s the first part of our first ever two parter.” I cynically replied. “Isn’t it part forty-four and foty-five of one ongoing episode?”
One of the most challenging aspects of this episode was, obviously, that half of the episode took place in an eclipse. The series has done eclipses twice before - in the Pilot, and briefly in the first episode of Season 2. But this episode carries the look much more extensively. Nate Goodman the director of photographer and I discussed how to achieve this. Ideally the look would be evenly lit and flat, i.e. no bright highlights, it would be dim with a blue-ish cast. Creating this look for interiors was one thing. Nate discussed how he would do it, with a large number of big lights surrounding the set, gelled with a heavy blue gel and creating a constant amount of hard light. The exteriors would have another approach. In the ideal, we would soften all the light and avoid all backlight. Nate wanted to put up big silks over the actors in every exterior environment (these are, essentially, 20x20 foot or 40x40 foot sheets that soften all the light coming through them) but the ability to hang these devices on our schedule became impractical. Ultimately we had to, sometimes, live with the light we had. Nate gets very excited about all this kind of stuff – but the more he described how he would achieve it the more I kind of glazed over. It was enormously technical. And, while I have a pretty good technical understanding of how most things work – I have my limits. I trust Nate completely and I knew his enthusiasm was a good indicator that all would turn out well. Sometimes as a director it’s best to just let something go and tell the person in charge of it “I trust you!”
There were also many discussions about how to slowly ramp up the eclipse throughout the episode. This was of particular interest not only to Nate but also to Eric Grenaudier and Mark Spatny from our visual effects house Stargate. Of course, we all had to get past the un-reality of the event. In real life there would never be a full eclipse visible from all these places on Earth at the same time. Eclipses also never last for this kind of duration. (Hey – I’m dubious about the whole premise that the eclipse would take our Heroes powers away at all. I don’t think the Pilot’s eclipse gave powers… But others disagreed and that ship had sailed.) But, after our first meeting and a brief round of arguments (that sounded a bit like the floor of the stock market) we all agreed that while Stargate would show numerous steps as the eclipse progresses – from a lighting standpoint there would just be “none,” “a little” and “full on.” Ultimately I believe in simplicity and clarity whenever possible.
But I still wasn’t really sure how it would all come together. And we weren’t able to really see the final look until the last stage of the process – which is the color timing. Color timing happens just a few days before we air the episode on Monday nights. Color timing is a process where we run the show through an electronic process that adjusts the colors, the lightness and darkness, and all manner of subtle things within the final look of the episode. It is a little known but critical part of the show. In this case, I went to color timing on the Thursday before the Monday when we went on the air. The timer had already worked through the picture and gotten it to a fine-tuned level, but we went through the eclipse scenes bit by bit, adjusting the amount of blue, darkening a lot of things, sometimes brightening the faces, and also flattening out the highlights in the shots. Only after all of that did I finally feel confident that the show had a compelling look. I was relieved.
I had fun designing shots for this one. My plan was to begin with slowly moving graceful shots. To try to create a steady sense of movement with the camera. Then, in act one to increase the pace of the motion. I started using faster stedicam shots, like the one with Angela and Claire in the Primatech hallways, and Peter and Nathan outside of Primatech. Then, as the eclipse began drawing nearer, I wanted to create the visual sense of bodies in orbit, and orbit around bodies - like the sun and the moon. I began using a circling pattern in my shot design and in the design of the blocking with actors. This is most evident in the scene between HRG and Claire in the safe house. The camera circles them over and over, orbiting them Immediately afterwards is a scene of Tracy on the phone which is intercut with Arthur on the phone. In thise scene I had the camera orbit around Tracy in a counter-clockwise pattern and around Arthur in a clockwise pattern. Intercut, there is a sense of antagonistic motion between the two halfs. This kind of stuff is fun to design, and while on the one hand it's very intellectual, I think it creates an subtle emotional component to the viewing experience.
One of the other challenges of this episode was creating the environment of Haiti. There aren’t that many places to shoot jungles in Los Angeles. The best and most frequently used is the place we ended up in, is the Los Angeles Arboretum in Pasadena. This place is famous, but I had personally never shot there. It was used in FANTASY ISLAND and GILIGAN’S ISLAND and now it has been further immortalized in HEROES. What the arboretum is is a lot of tropical plants in about a half acre of land around a lake. There are big pathways all through it and plaques on all of the plants. It looks impressively jungly but not huge, and if you step back you see a lot of stuff that shouldn’t be there – like park benches. Also, the rules are strict there and the crew and cast weren’t allowed to walk on or through the plants. So, ironically we had to bring in a lot of palm trees and ferns for anything that we interacted with.
The trick to making the jungle look good was to go on very long lenses and use lots of foreground. At first I went on wider lenses and used the crane and my other usual techniques… This was on the scene where The Haitian is leading The Petrelli boys through the jungle which ends with them running off after they are shot at. I’m the least happy with this sequence of all my jungle scenes. After that I went to long lenses foreground and either hand held or shaky camera (imitation hand held) from the dolly.
My favorite scene is the one where Peter and Nathan get in a fight, which culminates in the appearance of Jimmy Jean-Louis. The scene was very well written and had a natural escalation in the conflict between the brothers. It got to some core issues that I think haven’t been said as bluntly before. Milo and Adrian got pumped up for this one and came at it with strength. I think, in general, I was pushing for them to get angrier and grittier and yell more – to really let loose. But I’m always impressed by how much power Adrian can have when he goes soft. One of my favorite line readings of the scene is when, after being challenged by his brother, Nathan says “I’m a US Senator, you’re a nurse.” If I remember right, this line was scripted to be yelled, but Adrian went very soft and intense and I think the line is more cutting and powerful that way.
But, one story I must tell you, is that, for some reason, Milo and Adrian decided to pump themselves up for this scene by taking turns slapping each other on the back of the neck as hard as they could. I’m not sure how this brilliant idea got started, but I remember looking over and watching these two goofballs just smacking each other with all their might. There would be a loud CRACK! That echoed in the fake jungle and then, whoever had just been slapped started jumping around yelling, “Ow ow wow! Sonofab*&ch!” “Ah…” I thought to myself, “Ah, The Stanislavski method at work.” If you don’t believe me check out the pictures below. One is of the back of Adrian’s neck with welts in the exact shape of Milo’s fingers on it.
In the scene in Matt and Suresh’s apartment, when Hiro and Ando come to the door, there is a funny moment when the four cast members huddle around the comic book, which is a drawing of the exact moment they’re in. I always encourage the cast members to try to mimic the positions that Tim Sale has drawn for then as closely as possible. But, in this case Tim had drawn Matt’s hand in an incredibly awkward position to imitate. It cracked me up watching Greg Grunberg squish his hand around to try to get it to match. If you freeze your TiVo at the right moment you can see Greg Grunberg holding his hand in the dorkiest position ever. Try it!
I was also happy with the scene in the cornfield with Hiro, Ando and Matt, the one where Hiro throws corn at Matt to try to motivate him. I don’t think I fully appreciated this scene on the page. But when the actors started to act it out – it was just so funny. Masi was so committed and he just kept hurling corn at Greg. The line “The corn will keep coming!” makes me laugh even though it’s in Japanese. And Greg ad-libbed a funny one too when he turned to James and said, “How do you say ‘Stop it’ in Japanese?” My main contribution to the scene comes from the fact that I have a ten-year-old-boy at home. Because of this I had knowledge to encourage Masi to make a “Swoosh” sound every time he threw a cob.
Speaking of the corn. The art department had to screw thousands of corn stalks onto wooden 2x4’s and create the cornfield outside of the house – which is a standing set on a ranch owned by Disney. Greensmen had to move it around to camera every shot. Whenever you see a really wide shot, then all the distant cornfields have been added digitally and the characters are in front of a blue-screen.
Ah, our little show… Now, at last, the pictures…

Anyway, great episode tonight!
Great scene between Nathan and Peter in the jungle and also between Claire and Noah. It's heartening that real issues are being tackled and character drama is once again in the forefront.
I think I love the introduction of Daphne's disability as well: it just screams Season One, and is a wonderful addition. It gives a sense of motivation to a character that I've liked, but needed a bit more below the surface.
Oh and the whole powers starting with an eclipse? BS. From what I recall, not everyone's powers started at the same time. Much preferred the whole tragic moment initiating the whole fight or flight of the power.
And a massive BOOOOO to the person who was responsible for making the decision to have the eclipse last more than 6 - 7 minutes. Having it last too long only pulled me out of the story and made it hard to enjoy it.
What a super episode too. Daphne's reveal was absolutely incredible, definitely like Anon said, back to season one and it made me love her character even more. Nathan and Peter in the jungle also had good season one dialog, liked seeing the brothers back together again.
From what I understand about the eclipse, it takes away everyone's powers. But when it came the first time it gave everyone powers except for people who already found them through adrenaline (like Nathan). Right?! I hope so! Or else I'm lost ;-)
I love you guys, you still have loyal fans out there no matter what anyone else says. I'm excited EVERY week for what you'll bring to the table.
If you have killed off Elle at this point - TOOOO BAAAAD. She's so part of this show. Why would you start all this Sylar arc and then she's like... gone :(((((
ANYWAY, me too wonders at 9th Wonders origin now and the eclipse effect. Practically none of Heroes's powers was revealed in the Pilot - all of them already showed out at that moment.
The major thing the story lacks is CONSISTENCY. Character consistency first. Multi-dimensionalism doesn't meant you can switch from one thing to something totally different. (F.e. Sylar killed Elle's father. She's like MAD.Then she's flirting with him. Then she says he has to choose btw a monster and a puppet. What is her point?)
As for the rest, the drive & dynamics are crazy, humour is neat and fantasy is amazing. Keep it up :)
I have to say, my favorite part was the one-eighty in Claire's personality upon losing her powers. The subtle shift from a giggly teenage girl to a young woman who 'can't feel anything,' not even emotions, has been captivating, this season; to see it all unwind into her declaring that being shot in the shoulder 'sucks,' her giddiness at feeling something for the first time in so long (even agonizing pain), was one of the most moving moments in the history of the show. Props for the writing, directing, and acting in that scene, and all the other scenes with HRG and Claire.
And ... I don't know. I'm finally starting to understand where you're going with some of these plotlines, and at this point, I honestly have nothing but compliments.
Also, haha, you saw the requests for shirtless Zach a few posts back? XD I am amused.
As for 9th Wonders, I'm assuming Isaac had a few issues already at the printer before he died? You never know, maybe he was way more on top of things than we thought.
I still have problems with the characterization, like Sylar being pleased that he lost his abilities and Elle being written as having multiple personalities. I don't see the sexual chemistry between those two at all, but it looks like they're going to be separated pretty quickly, so I will have that to look forward to.
As others have said, I LOVE the reveal of Daphne's disability. That is how you reveal a character's motivations, Heroes writers! And mmmm, Mohinder. I'd like to see more full-frontal action of him, but hold the mucous, please ;)
Last but not least, great set of pictures in this post. Thanks for sharing all of them with us!
Keep making episodes like this and I'll keep watching!
I'm a huge fan of Heroes and I just want to say that as a series it's inspired me to be a better filmmaker and be as ambitious as I like- http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=EMEhoNmJkiI is the last episode of my series and in spirit it's totally Heroes for me :D
keep up the good work!
HUH??????
Do you want us to forget the way Sylar was in s2?! He was powerless then, had the attention, trust and love of a beautiful, good woman but he still wanted power, still killed! But oh no that never happened! God, once this forced pairing of Elle/Sylar is over the better.
Again so disappointed that the whole Maya/Sylar storyline and interaction is being ignored for this and Maya given no resolution apart from the loss of her power.
Happy to see some mention of her in this, hope she comes back and given a freakin chance and show of respect by the writers!
I kinda like how Sylar's been changing, but I would just LOVE if you guys could stop ignoring the second season. Okay, people didn't like it, but why going on as if it never happened? It's like those 11 episodes have been totally useless! Monica's gone, Adam's gone, Maya's gone, Bob's gone .. Elle's the only new character that's still on the show.
I agree with the Sylar/Maya comment. It would have been SO interesting, not just because of the pairing, but .. well, Sylar changed touching Claire's hand and feeling the pain he caused her; he did the same with Elle, so why can't we just see what could happen if he faced the person he hurt the most? You can't just go on as if nothing of that ever happened.
& please, bring Maya/Dania back in the show. She deserves so much more.
It's like for making certain fans happy (I loved S2, and there was the strike, how can we judge something it wasn't even finished yet?), you're screwing certain storylines up. It's just normal to not like this or that plot twist or character, you can't make everyone happy.
This said, I'm still excited every week to see what's in store, so PLEASE! I have faith in the show, keep up the good work!
In fact with the exception of the Sylar/Elle storyline (the characterizations still make no sense to me -- Sylar is relieved at being ordinary? No way. He might have been resigned to living the life of a watchmaker in season one until Chandra showed up but he always felt destined for more and entitled to it -- screw the hunger and Elle making him feel "true love") I actually enjoyed all the other storylines. I liked seeing Matt with Hiro/Ando and Daphne, I was interested in the Petrellis and then meeting up The Haitian, I was interested watching HRG and Claire.
And even though I feel like a reset button suddenly got hit for Mohinder to put him back to pre-Season 3 form it still worked for me. This is the Mohinder I tend to find more interesting -- smart, but in over his head, trying to maneuver within a calculated and manipulative scenario that places him as the underdog.
I'm still figuring out what I think about the eclipse aspect of all of this...and I'm still ignoring the Sylar/Elle retcon because it makes me cringe but other than that I wanted to say that I still enjoyed this one. Of course if I could see Sylar and Mohinder cross paths again it would be all the better.
There are still stupid plot holes I feel any writer worth their salt wouldn't be making. So Daphne having super speed made her legs better? How? Why didn't her legs give out when she was around the Haitian in the movie theater when he stopped everyone's powers then? That really ruined the big reveal for me.
Who the hell is writing all the 9th Wonder comics with Isaac dead? Why is it the you guys kill off every cool new character like the new black African Isaac? I think one of the best things that happened was the firing of Jeph Loeb and Jesse Alexander and I can't wait until there are episodes they didn't have a hand in.
Then there was this:
Sylar: I have to prove myself...
Elle: What are you talking about?
Sylar: You wouldn't understand...
Right, Elle wouldn't know anything about having to prove yourself to your father. Just struck me as really lazy writing.
So Elle went from having this huge crisis about turning Sylar into a killer and now doesn't even think twice about it? Making up your damn minds about Sylar! He's bad, then he's good, then he's bad BUT he wants to be good OOPS he's bad again. He and HRG are the only things on the show worth watching please make up your minds on him.
I don't know if you read the internet or fan groups but PLEASE KILL TRACY/BARBARA/JESSICA/NIKKI/WHATEVER! She was never a good character and was pretty universally disliked so making 10 clones twins of her is just annoying. Also, please never bring Maya back, she's another I'm hard pressed to find anyone who likes her.
Also, Mohinder was one of my favorite characters season one and he's basically ruined. He's gone in to many stupid directions to really bring him back to relevant and interesting.
I don't really care about the eclipse other than the fact it's a contrived plot device. As someone on one of the web forums said:
"We've got an (a)eclipse which causes powers to appear, even though it's established that powers are a result of (b) adrenaline causing a biological change. Of course, people can be given powers with a (c)formula, but this requires a (d)catalyst, but only (e)sometimes (like Nikki clone as a baby).
And now an Eclipse is coming that takes powers away. It's not that I can't handle bullshit explanations, it's that they can't seem to be satisfied with just 1."
I can't imagine trying to make up an explanation that encompasses all of that would be anything but eyerollingly bad.
I'm happy you guys actually acknowledged Hiro as a 'walking reset device' and while that would be an annoying use of him I'd forgive it if it was actually used properly with good writers to get the show back to it' season 1 glory. I'm starting to lose interest in Hiro as well because there seems to be no development to him. I want to see him start to become the awesome katana wielding badass that came from the future with the 'Save the cheerleader, save the world' message season 1 on the bus.
I don't comment to be a bitch, I comment because I really loved the show season 1 and I think it has so much potential to be awesome again.
I just wish you wouldn't show people looking at the sun with their bare eyes all the time! You should never look at an eclipse even, use those spacey eclipse glasses, or possibly go blind. Yeah ;) Nikki in Season one used Micas contraption (pin camera?), and that's a wise choice.
(Hey – I’m dubious about the whole premise that the eclipse would take our Heroes powers away at all. I don’t think the Pilot’s eclipse gave powers… But others disagreed and that ship had sailed.)
I'm so glad to hear this. They should have listened to you, of course... But as long as you're on the show, I'll have faith! You rule, Sir.
So, there's still some bad habits from season 2. Drama and Romance are not what made this show a huge hit on Season 1 ( you've got 2 more seasons and can't get back on track.)Season 2 was the perfect example of what not to do with the characters and the plot of the show.
Heroes is all about adventure, Sci-Fi, human connections and development, friendship, good v.s. bad. Look at Season 1 and you'll see this.
This season started well, you got the attention of those who said "I hate this show" ( I include myself here), there was promise and now once again comes the disappointment.
The plot doesn't make any sense anymore and the characters are not developing they are flip flopping for no reason. That's what characters in soap operas do.
Somewhere half through the season you lost the control and direction of the show.
The Network is really not helping with a bunch of shows failing ( except for The Office ) so, if this was a network attempt to appeal to a wider audience, that was the mistake number one because you lost a lot of people on Season 2 doing that.
When you read most of the comments here, you realize there's a lot of people that like the show and the critical ones. Listen to both of them, since they're pointing out what's working and what's definitely not working at all.
( like Daphne loosing her power in front of the Haitian and nothing happened to hear. Had she fell down to the floor at that moment would have added more drama to the character, and you would have gained people's sympathy for her character . Kudos to anonymous 7.38 a.m. )
Face the facts, you still have potential, the show is not making any sense to a lot of people, there is no direction, and pushing the fans to like or understand this season is what you are doing.
In my opinion, HEROES can still pull it off, hopefully it's not too late.
And if anything, one thing I've learnt from watching this show is 'nothing is ever what it seems.'
You think one thing, you get another...
9th Wonders Comic...? Just another mystery to the magic of Heroes. Maybe it's daddy Petrelli..who knows..we'll all know in due time.
We have to look at who had that power:
Issac..Sylar..Father Petrelli...(anyone else?) who knows.
I for one am enjoying the dynamic with Sylar's character.
Yes, we all love and adore the badass, but I don't think he'll ever be "good".
I love his personal tug of war with finding himiself.
I could understand his relief. He never necessarily enjoyed hurting people (least of all Elle).
Yes, the pairing is a little forced, but he did have a strong bond to her before he turned evil. She did save his life after all.
There's so much more in store for Sylar, and I can't wait to watch!!
As far as the eclipse...no way their loss of powers is permanent...otherwise you've lost the whole premise of the show.
Things will be explained in their own way sooner or later...
Patience.
Can't wait for next weeks Ep!!
Great blog!!
J
Nobody else really catches on the awesomeness of HRG, I loved it as soon as he realized Sylar's powers were gone BOOM! He takes them all out. I was cheering at how awesome he was.
Oh and please kill Mohinder, nobody likes him anymore.
Unfortunately this show's writing is getting worse and worse. Tons of plot holes as others have written about.
For instance, one moment Elle wants to be nice, next moment, she wants Gabriel to be bad, then nice, etc etc.. what's this about?
Please kill some of the "heroes" off, their characters slow down the show... they hold back the development of other characters.
Lastly, what happened to the staff of people that actually read comic books? The writers of the show obviously have no clue of writing from the perspective of a comic book.. and the storyline is completely a cluster of crap now.
Please, save the storyline, save the show.
(Kill off Parkman, Mohinder, bring back a scene of future badass Hiro, Monica, and heck, even Micah. But seriously, the writers have really destroyed Mohinder... just kill him off already. The Fly? )
-Cho
I can't wait to see more episodes. Great work - and good luck. You're gonna need it.
how many worldwide eclipses occur in this universe that you guys have created?
if the eclipse is what initially causes the characters to have their power...then would the "first gen" have lost their powers during the last eclipse...or at least connected the eclipse to gaining powers?
and didnt both elle and claire have their powers since they were children...and didnt nathan first fly when he was in the accident with his wife?
and what is this whole thing with sylar? when he killed isaac, he was sadistic...same when he killed baby google maps parents...and his own mother
claire is pissed that hrg keeps going away? i thought she was pissed that he wanted blackhole guy to kill when he didnt want to...make up your friggin minds
the attempts to rehabilitate the program stink
shoot...at least when they revamped superman...they told everyone what they were doing
make an announcement...everything that you saw in season 1 and season 2...well we had no clue what we were doing...so ignore everything...we are starting all over again
this is what happens when you have a showrunner who didnt created a bible...hired his flunky's to write scripts...and hired low grade talent from the comix industry to give authenticity
wanna reboot with a real fix?
lobby the suits to dump your boss...hire fuller as showrunner...and hire warren ellis
to be headwriter
And having Daphne just collapse under the influence of the Haitian would have been ridiculous. Like someone said earlier, she got back home, walked into her house, sat down.... She even said 'it's starting again.' Not 'oh em gee my lower half just stopped working.' It makes perfect sense that she wouldn't spontaneously become a cripple the moment she lost her ability.
And for everyone who's complaining about the logic of the eclipse - sure, it's not the most believable thing. I'm on your side, here, Greg. But this is a televised comic book. Comic books have people turn giant and green when they're angry. I headtilted a little bit, yeah, but just go with it. The point is not to show how their powers went away, but to see how they deal with their powers being gone. It sets up a chance to put the human back in the characters, which the show needs rather a lot.
At this point, the only thing that's still putting me off is Syelle, but I feel like that won't be going on much longer, so, you know. Whatever. ^^ Great ep, Mr. Beeman, yet again.
THANK YOU! Haha I loved it. And I was a little shocked to see Mohinder's change at first but I love him still. I like my Mohinder good and evil, but I am waiting for another Mohinder and Sylar scene.
I understood the whole Daphne wouldn't be crippled immediately by the Haitian. But I didn't like the eclipse stops powers idea ever. However, I am enjoying watching these Heroes have to deal without their powers for a while. It's refreshing and really makes them think.
Also, Daphne: amazing character development! It answers so many questions, and gives her so much more depth. I'd love a flashback or two of her before she discovered her powers.
The only real problem I had with this episode was that, in season one, there was such a big deal about the eclipse - just in general "ooh aah" among the populace - but when a second one happens only a year later, it's not really spoken about as a phenomenon. But whatever, I'm just nitpicking.
Great job once again! Keep it up!
If he died, I'd be crushed.
I also liked the addition of Daphne with a disability that is so far removed from her power. It makes me want to see her 1st reaction to realizing what she could do. (and I don't say that often)
I did have a question though... (Not a criticism...I'm just unsure.) Nathan said he flew after the eclipse; but didn't he fly out of the car in that 6 months ago episode? That was before the eclipse right?
Anyway, I try not to over analyze and take the fun out of it; and skimming through I saw a lot of anonymous posting... A sure sign of complainers...I think I'll skip over comments this time.
I've missed him, and the guy really deserves a break from the dangerous and impossible situations everyone keeps putting him through!
And like the pairing or not, him wanting to contact Maya is a nice touch of continuity, paying attention to a character's emotions, making them believable.
After Kring's comment regarding Caitlin, I feared there would be no further acknowledgement of any of the women that the characters are supposed to love, you know... like Heidi, too.
So... yeah, I'm just happy to see Mohinder back to his normal self.

Also, so glad to hear there were people (or at least A person) on the staff who were skeptical about the eclipse, too. None of the Heroes "got" their powers from the first eclipse, they almost all had them at least six months before (not to mention the elder generation, who've had them since at least the sixties.)
That said, I loved the Nathan and Peter scenes. I've missed seeing them interact so much, and everything they said a LONG time in coming. I found it interesting how neither of them seemed to quite get to the heart of their issues... Nathan about Peter shooting him and Peter, I'm guessing?, about whatever it is that has really made him so angry at his father, and thus, so angry at Nathan for siding with him.
I loved, too, Claire being so thrilled to be in agony. That was a beautiful character moment.
And the way Arthur looked so small and even frightened after he'd lost his powers. Good stuff.
I loved everything about it, the Peter/Nathan scenes, Daphne's disability, the Claire/HRG scenes, the scene where Claire could finally felt pain again...everything. So full of emotion, the cast did an amazing job.
Also, the lighting was superb, i kept wondering through the episode how you achieved that real ecplipse effect and that atmosphere.
An amazing episode overall, i really enjoyed it, you did an amazing job as director.
Oh, and thanks for the pics! Love Hayden's cake <3
I LOVE Mohinder (to those who say "nobody likes him anymore"). I love him NORMAL. He is the link btw all the heroes. He must be the touchstone the characters turn to! So please, let him be the wonderful himself he is!
Syelle IS rushed, I agree, but, nevertheless, it's heart-warming. ZQKB have lovely chemistry, never are they self-conscious around each other. They play out whatever material they're given amazingly, I support any of their interaction completely. In terms of characters, them falling for each other is quite logical: two lost souls longing to be loved and appreciated (add absolute mental unstability) found comfort in each other - no surprise you guys decided to pair them up.
Hiro is actually the ONE "HERO" IN NEED OF REDEMPTION. He's just sooo screwed up. Absolute loss. Can you save him huh?
Thanks for the blog! :)))
also in the episode 6 months ago from the first season, it showed many other people already with powers. The founders all already had powers before the eclipse, and so far as i can tell, that map of people with abilities that Suresh's father made was made before the eclipse.
I dont know maybe just have the eclipse accelerate the powers that are already there, or something but try to keep it consistant.
overall its still my favorite show of all time. also as far as the second season goes i liked it, not sure why many didnt aside, from its short length i thought it was good.
I am a Maya fan! She has them and we watch too. Sylar needs to pay. ;)
Also give her something (not someone) to do. She has the potential to be as great as Angela. \o/
Hell hath no fury and all that. ;)
YUS! Maya should never been made into a wench (bed wench, cleaning wench, audience’s scantily clad wench etc)
She’s a passionate, empathetic woman who's trust and love was betrayed by a deceiving, brother murdering Sylar. And we've seen she's got one hell of a temper. She's got an amazing story right there!
She’s got so much potential and Dania really deserves so much more. Come on writers, you've thrown the ball away for a forced retcon, it's time to pick it up for Fugitives!
The scenes with Claire and her father were also great. It's nice to see the return of touching character moments. Trust the Petrelli boys and Bennets to deliver.
Unfortunately I can't say the same about Sylar and Elle. The writing for these characters is so inconsistent and out of character that not even the actors can save it.
It's also encouraging that you had doubts about the mechanics and story justification for the eclipse, Greg. Seeing the heroes without their powers is an intriguing concept but I wished it had not been at the expense of established show canon like so many things this season. However as long as there is strong characterization as displayed by the Petrellis and Bennets this episode, I personally don't mind plot holes or continuity issues so much.
it's really important for me to let you know my thoughts on this episode partly b/c I'm representing a huge country of Heroes fans which is so far away from you, but mostly - as I simply admire you as one of the TPTBs behind my fave show.
So, I wish, I wish, I wish you would really read this and know that:
- You should (too bad you can't) direct all Heroes episodes. You do such an amazing job with it. Your style, your knowledge and your dedication are seen at once, it is felt at once that your heart is beating with the show's heart. Go on, please. I really ship Beeman-director/Heroes-the-show :)
- To me, this episode is soo rooted in Season 1 with its soul and dynamics and mood. This spirit of revelations, the difficulty of being just a human in unhuman circumstances and with super-powers... The wideness and depth of emotions is a huge relief. Keep it up!
- I wanted to cry when Daphne revealed to Matt she's crippled. Damn. My heart broke. I wanted to hug the Petrelli bros when they started to fight coz it felt so family-like and so real. Haitian is back and so is the politics - yay! Even Hiro looked a bit more adequate than in prev eps (really). HRG is exactly he was back in S1. Claire is much more likeable when she's more down-to-earth. Mohinder going to find Maya - nice touch, don't forget the forsaken characters! Sylar/Elle arc makes sense, I think they click amazingly well together. Many people could object to that but I insist: they are very similar, their attraction to each other feels so natural, so... sensual, if you like. Promise to keep this connection btw them even if Elle is going to be left out of the show. Sylar does have a thing for her so... can't she claim a piece of his heart forever?(!)
- Last but not least: I want you to know, Heroes has lots of fans in Russia. I myself have recruited half of my acquiantances as fans. My dad is crazy about it. The movement is growing. And we all agree on one thing for sure: you, guys, created a fantastic world and whatever you do with it - it is your right to introduce your imagination and develop your fantasy to any possible extent. We'll still keep checking in! God bless you!

I'm sorry the show is taking such a battering - it must be hard when everyone is still working their fingers for the bones without the past levels of positive feedback.
I thought this episode was a big step in the right direction, being excitingly paced but now making time for the character development we've been missing of late. The amazing cast you have assembled is one of Heroes greatest assets and I can understand some of the frustration felt by viewers when amazingly talented actors like Adrian Pasdar and Jack Coleman are given very little to do to advance their characters. As I say, this week was much better in this regard as it was great to see Nathan and Peter just getting a chance to talk to each other. This is encouraging because their rapport in many ways, is one of the things that gives the show real heart.
Anyway, good job all round and I'm very much looking forward to next week's episode.
http://heroesbrasil.blogspot.com/2008/11/beemans-blog-3x10.html
Really good!
The good: Heroes is definitely back. And back with a true mandate. I cannot thank the entire production crew for the fine work you have ALL done in correcting the S2 screwups. I also want to thank you AGAIN for this fab blog. No other show on TV gives the fans the behind the scenes look AND accepts input they way yours does.
The Bad: Star Wars forever became the Skywalker family chronicles after Darth Vader said those famous words to his son. Heroes seems to be falling into the trap of overdoing this. Next week I am waiting to find out that Hiro is secretly Mohinder's 6th cousin 5 times removed.
The Ugly: Nathan wanting the Haitin to remove the wammy so he could fly home? Ummm...Nate my boy? Think back to S1 when HRG and the Haitan came to collect you and you flew away with absolutely no problem.
In my humble opinion the one thing that I find most aweful is when successful story continuity is later messed with and in the process of, messed up!! Come on boys, watch those gaffs!!!
Memo: To Greg Beeman and the rest of the Heroes copy and paste thieves.
The WGA-West Coast is nothing more than a chop shop for copy and paste thieves that steal other original artists copyrighted intellectual properties.
The copy and paste thieves of Heroes are nothing more than hack writers that operate like car theft rings.
The Movement To Put Tim Kring In Jail is moving fast forward to have these types of copy and paste criminals tried as "Organized crime" under the Rico Law.
If Greg Beeman's last name was Gambino or Gotti, his office would be raided by the FBI, Beeman arrested, tried and sent to prison for felony and organized crime.
Because of American white racism the move to put these criminals in prison may require a lot of effort, but The Movement To Put Tim Kring In Jail will not stop until the world know the heinous crimes these stupid criminals have committed and they're incarcerated for their crimes.
You'll be surprised at who we know and who we are, Beeman.
tim Kring's reward for stealing those NYC artists work, x-men, the watchmen etc...?
tollet ratings, failure and the honor of calling NBC's customers "Saps and Dipshits".
All of those morons in "The Room" should go to jail.
update:
The lawsuit in a NYC Appellate court against NBC and Tim Kring for copyright infringement by The Twins?
The verdict?
It's Coming........
The wga west is not protesting outside of nbc's studios and tim kring is still a member of the wga west.
it's all racism, the wga is a racist organization.
some hollywood writers should have been tried as organized crime groups long ago, and i wish the movement to put that jackass in jail much success.
how can i join or help the movement?
did the haitian put voodoo on heroes because his role on the show is small?
and what's coming?
no heroes after dec 15, that's what's coming.
but hey!! Mc Donald's is hiring, greg.
tyler perry has real talent, and his show's ratings prove that fact.
i think sylar character is starting to seem really inconsistent now... as Anonymous 7.38 AM put so aptly... syalr's "bad, then he's good, then he's bad BUT he wants to be good OOPS he's bad again"
otherwise, this episode was one of the best this season :-)
Not to mention that the first ecplise was at the end of the first episode, by which point Claire has already made sevreal "suicide" attempts and Hiro had his powers as well.
This show is starting to look and feel like Charmed.
