SEASON 3 – EPISODE 22
“TURN AND FACE THE STRANGE”
WARNING: TURN AROUND NOW IF YOU DON’T WANT TO FACE ANY STRANGE SPOILERS
Tonight’s episode was co-written by Rob Fresco and Mark Verheiden
Jeannot Szwarc directed the episode
I don’t know if it was an experiment of the writer’s room or just a way to get a script out twice as fast, but Rob Fresco and Mark Verhieden – who aren’t normally a team – were paired up on this one. As a casually observer the experiment seemed to turn out well… Their working relationship was casual and cordial and they had fun. For me it was interesting, because, in prep, some days we would have one and some days we would have the other. Each of them divided up the work by storyline… I might get the details wrong here – I’m working purely from memory, but I believe… Mark wrote the Suresh story, the Matt story and the Sylar/Danko scenes and the final scene Coyote Sands. Rob wrote the Hero/Ando story, the HRG/Sandra story, and the story of Danko’s girlfriend.
Jeannot, I know, is very proud of this episode. It’s his seventh or eighth episode for us… But I think it’s his favorite. I know he’s particularly pleased with the emotional dynamics in the story of HRG, Sylar and Sandra.
From my point of view, the post-production process was very simple on this one. The only real problem that the first cut was about eight minutes long. Key reductions were made in Suresh scenes – there was a second scene with Suresh and the landlord that was lifted out – and there was also considerably more dialogue between Matt and Danko’s girlfriend, where we learned a lot about her life story. Both of these scenes were lifted for time and to enhance the overall pace. There were a few other simple trims and re-cuts – but largely the internal strucure of this show remained intact from the first cut that Jeannot and editor Lois Blumenthal delivered.
Which reminds me - I think our cast did a stellar job, as always, but I think Greg Grundberg really stepped up on this one. His story was a hard one to play, because he is, essentially out for revenge – which tends to be unsympathetic. Greg’s stock in trade is his accessible “nice guy” quality. And here, in my opinion, he really dug down for some more tortured qualities, without losing his inherent sympathy. This is a tough assignment.
I also think that the Hiro and Ando story is hilarious. When I first watched the directors cut, in the editing room with editor Lois Blumenthal, it came to the scene where Hiro and Ando were making faces at Baby Matt to cheer him up – I busted a gut laughing… I couldn’t stop. The way the boys had played it and the way Lois had jump-cut their expressions made me laugh and laugh in a way that hurt my tummy a little. On set this moment was very free-form – Jeannot was behind the monitors calling out for the boys to switch up their faces every few moments – as this went on they started making goofier and goofier faces. Finally, James Kyson Lee made a certain face and Jeannot leaped out of his chair “that’s it!” I think, at this point, life imitated art a little – as James realized he was now stuck repeating this ridiculous expression over and over – and he began to regret it. It’s still pretty funny though.
Oh – and once more a tip of the hat to the twins that play Baby Matt – Brendon and Quinn Reed. These are the best film babies I’ve ever seen. They are only 9 months old and they cry on cue, laugh on cue, look where they’re supposed to and are extremely expressive in every way. The whole crew couldn’t get over how the really seemed to “act.” The babies got extremely attached to Masi, by the way. They seemed fascinated with him and would watch him wherever he went. At the end of the episode, when Greg Grundberg came in and Matt discovered he had a son – there was a small problem, because the babies weren’t as bonded with Greg. In one shot, Greg was holding Baby Matt and talking to him, and the baby was looking all around the set for Masi. Finally Jeanott asked Masi to stand, off-camera, directly behind Greg. So, in the last scenes when the baby appears to be staring lovingly at Matt, it’s really staring lovingly at Masi who’s just off-stage.
There’s a new phenomenon at play on set – which is that, because of Sylmar’s new morphing ability, lots of different actors are getting to play Sylar – and it’s fun to see their interpretation of it. One of my favorites is Željko Ivanek.
Željko is a very interesting actor who I’ve only started to figure out. He’s very quiet and serious, and at first I took him to be shy. At times we can have a very goofy, crazy set – particularly when myself, Milo, Adrian or Grundberg are around. Željko stood a little outside of the group on his first few episodes, which I guess is natural. But then two things started to happen. One, the character began to be written with more depth. At first he was just a very mono-directed “bad guy.” Beginning with episode #20 we began to understand him more and, I’m assuming, Željko did too. So I began to see the depth of his acting ability and his facility for nuance. Also, I assume, he began to get comfortable with our group. In the shaving scene with Greg Yaitanes I saw him begin to joke and kid around. Anyway, back to the point – when Željko played Sylar – I think he captured the quality of humor and enjoyment that Zach Quinto always brings to the part. See, Slyar LOVES messing with people and living an inch from being caught. The scene in the bathroom where Danko meets Sylar/Danko is a lot of fun. It is also admirable in that much of the first part of the scene is done in one shot. The camera pans Danko in and reveals the other Danko – then moves in as Danko approaches himself. This was obviously tricky because each half of the scene has to be shot separately. Also we don’t have time or money for “motion control” rigs – in which computerized gear-head can match camera pans and tilts and even push in’s between separate takes. So Željko had to do it himself and act to himself that wasn’t there and look to a spot in the air that isn’t there. It’s hard to do all that. And I think he really provides us with two separate characters and performances.
Ashley Crow also got to play Sylar, but her part was a little easier – because in the scene with HRG- Sylar is trying to act like Sandra. The fun transition comes outside as Ashley walks into the alley then pauses and shape-shifts into Sylar. Both Zach and Ashley were on set together that day and they helped each other through that scene.
Another fun scene is the one where Jack Coleman as HRG “pretends” to be Sylar to Danko. If the editing room we laughed about this because we decided that Jack was channeling Bryan Fuller for that part of the scene. I’m not sure if he did or not, and I hope Bryan doesn’t take offense – but that’s what we decided was happening in the cutting room – and it made me smile.
For some reason, more than other directors – the crazy HEROES scheduling process seems to bone poor Jeannot. Partly it’s his fault, because he is a very popular TV director and he’s very booked up on shows like GREYS ANATOMY, BONES, COLD CASE, SMALLVILLE, WITHOUT A TRACE, etc. etc… So his schedule is tight and our schedule is, at best, loose. In the case of this episode – one of the scenes Jeannot didn’t get to direct was the one where Matt is first re-introduced to his son, in the playground. Because this scene took place on a one-time-only location – it became kind of an orphan. We found the space at a school a few blocks away (I’d shot a scene there once before when Matt came to pick up Molly after school in season 2). The scene was to take about 4 hours to shoot and was scheduled, originally, to shoot side-by-side with the bus station scenes in episode #20… But rain delayed those scenes and they got re-distributed. Allan Arkush ended up directing this scene – it actually was on one of our last days of filming along with a bunch of inserts that were needed to wrap up the final episodes. We dropped the scene into the show at the very last second.
The two final scenes of the episode, which are really a prelude to episode #23 (where Angela gathers the family and HRG at a mysterious place), had to be delayed in order to be shot in tandem with episode #23. I’m sure I’ll talk about this extensively next week – but this episode takes place almost entirely at this concentration camp of sorts, called Coyote Sands. It is set partly in the past and partly in the present, and in that episode we will learn a lot about Angela and what drives her to be the way she is…. It was a massive construction project for Production designer Ruth Ammon and the art department, done on location about 40 miles outside of L.A. Anyway – because those scene had to be delayed for weeks until that episode was ready to shoot, I took on the chore of directing them.
Jeannot had given me one key instruction for the first scene – he had a shot in mind where we would be on a very, very long lens camera, and dust would reveal mysterious shapes – we would rack focus slowly and slowly reveal Angela and Peter arriving. I did that, and followed his basic plan for the scene (I might have added more "push-ins" than Jeannot would have - I just love push-ins and I can't help myself.) We got lucky with the light that day. It had just rained and snowed and there was a quality of light that is very uncommon in Los Angeles – crisp but soft. It felt more like a scene one would shoot in Montana or New Mexico than in L.A. I worked hard to chase the backlight and staged the scene to the late afternoon sun. There is a two-shot of Hayden and Milo, done late in the day just as the sun was about to drop behind the mountains. They are both front-lit by a very soft amber sunlight, as are the snow-covered hills behind them I had the special effects guys blow dust in the distance... Oh man, I think that is a beautiful shot.
I also did the night scene where they dig up skeletons. Jeannot had described to me a way of shooting the scene all in one shot. Now I love oner's... And I had been to the location several times when we first found it - but then hadn't been up there again since construction was complete. When I got there, I was trying to imagine the shot Jeannot was describing and I couldn't... Normally, when directing scenes for others, I try to be really loyal to their vision - but this time I just didn't see it. I had the tool of the techno-crane there and I knew the scene had to be mysterious and eerie and foreboding. Other than that I just winged it getting the shots that felt right to me at the time. Because I didn't really prep this episode, I might have missed the proper emotion between Claire and HRG as she sees him arrive. I was going with the mystery of it all and trying to create a foreboding vibe. In my memory, these two characters hadn't seen each other since episode #19, and there was still tension and unresolved feelings. Later, though, other producers felt that Claire should have been happier to see her father. I'm not sure - you decide.

the babies are awesome :) lol @ them being in love with masi oka
sylar's new power makes the episodes INCREDIBLE... and yay for the long blog entry!
Keep up the good work!
But I'm kind of worried that you guys are heading into 5YG verse. It will be so wrong if you have Sylar kill Nathan. A lot of your fan base have invested in Nathan's storyline over three seasons. People grow attached to certain characters on a show. They've loved him. They want to see him reunited with his family (Simon and Monty, remember them?). Plus, Heroes without the brothers Petrelli is just as sad sad show that I will probably not be able to make myself watch. I know it's already been shot, but seriously, I hope you don't kill off Nathan.
Again.
Can't wait to see next week's episode! The preview looked awesome.
and I loved the location at the end you guys found.
As for killing nathan later, I wont have a problem with it. Its getting harder and harder to relate to the guy and frankly I want him dead any way. I know they want him to walk the grey line of good and evil, but Im finding it hard to see the good in him anymore.
My favourite picture is Zachary Quinto with Ashley Crow.
About the episode, it was pretty cool but it left me specially waiting for the next one and Angela's secrets YAY! She's totally my fave character right now!
The only bad thing to me is Sylar... I really LOVED him but it's sad to see so much potential lost, specially after what you did with him this season. He could have been one of the most amazing villains ever!... complex, likable, ambiguous and interesting as a character... instead we are back to the same old stuff which was good back on S1 but now is getting stale... his intentions and even his plan is pretty clear now, where's the surprise really? I'm bored. Duh, if I could choose he would totally be the one to leave on this finale instead of Nathan... not such a luck I guess :/
I loved this episode, and actually caught myself thinking, after it was over: wow! They really did it. Our show is back!
Re: Claire's reaction at the end, I don't know. I don't necessarily think your take was wrong, because indeed, Claire has had issues with Noah, and in this interval of time she's had a chance to really get to know Nathan as well. She wasn't expecting Noah to show up there. So it's understandable that, at the very least, she would be confused at this point.
Besides, it would probably add to Noah's distress regarding the fact that his family - a family he has arguably taken for granted - is now rapidly slipping through his hands (which is a brilliant character point.) Though I guess this'll all be moot by next week if, just as understandably, Claire is in fact happier to see him.
I love the whole storyline with Hiro, Ando and baby Matt. It was hilarious that Ando had to hold that funny face so the baby would be happy. And it was good to see daddy Matt so happy after being so sad and conflicted after Daphne's death.
Only 3 more shows...:(
I was iffy about a baby storyline, but I think those little guys are great! That is so cute that they have bonded with Masi, but it doesn't really surprise me, because he has such a genuinely good personality.
I want to thank the writers for getting Mohinder back to his father's research. I don't care if it bores other people, I would much rather see him get back to his noble S1 self rather than acting like the Hulk. Really loved that bit of him pushing in the lock, using his power in a subtle, practical way. Please keep up the good work, writers!
I may be in the minority here, but I'm really starting to like Sylar for his characterization, not just because ZQ is playing him. I can see why others are sick of him now, but I think that things are heading in the right direction, especially because there's no more BS HUNGER to tolerate and Sylar is being less emo and more manipulative. Now if he's just kept away from failed "romance" plots and keeps working with actors he has good chemistry with, I'll be happy with his arcs until he dies.
Oh, and LOVE the shapeshifting ability. I think that puts a great spin on things, because it's fun trying to figure out who's Sylar and who isn't. I like that added tension and sense of unpredictability to the storyline. Great call on that one, guys!
Noah and Sandra broke my heart... specially for Sandra, in Noah's case he had it coming for messing up with Sylar as he did in Villains and Eclipse, which resulted in Sylar going nuts again and onedimensional again and in poor Elle's death and I'm still not forgiving :/ So nice revenge, even if the plan was a lil childish.
But anyway, Sylar is soooo boring now, you really need to consider doing something else with him, give him a rest for a volume or so, or kill him off for good... I miss his human side, it made him more complex even though it's ok to not have emo stuff in every episode and been more manipulative... still he lacks of that complexity he had before he meet his father, and I'm worried he's gonna keep being as simple as he is now.
Hiro and Ando made me laugh my butt off, I haven't enjoyed them so much in a long time, keep that coming!!
Why was Matt acting like if he didn't know he had a baby?? I know he thought it could not his but he seemed to not even have a clue that Janice was pregnant... like WTF??
And seriously guys... would it be too difficult to drop a line or two about where is Molly hidden on the show? you missed a perfect chance in this eppie really... it's getting ridiculous...
Anyway, entrataining episode.
That was so creepy when Sandra morphed back into Sylar.
Ando and Hiro, were cool as always.
For a brief minute I was scared that Matt was really going be shot.
I should not write this but I'm going to anyway. Sylar in the body bag was yummy:-)
DFG3
The rest of the episode was BRILLIANT! Oh! I can't wait to see the next episode! You all guys, are great!! ;)
Anyway, Heroes rocks, and I hope to see many powers unleashed during the last episode of volume 4.
thanks for all the charachter who are very good in the show :=)
glad heroes is back on track.
This one was a really emotional episode. Mr. Jack Coleman was just GREAT portraying the human side of HRG, which we rarely see. For a moment I thougth that the Snadra who was giving him the divorce papers was the real one. Ashley Crow did an AWESOME job here, I'm happy that you're giving her great moments this season. When Noah broke into her room with the gun I was afrais the he was going to kill hr by accident, believing that she was Sylar. How good that Lyle called in that exact moment.
I just loved the two parallel stories of HRG and Matt, both with Danko as the connection. They were exciting and emotional. And we finally got to see the Hunter's human side... and her name is Alena. Too bad she walked away form him... maybe there was hopefor him if he loved her so much.
Sylar's new shape-shifthing ability was bad news for both mine an my sister's brain cells, as we both spent the whole episode trying to figure out who he was every moment. But it was sooo exciting too!!! The scene with Noah pretending to be Sylar in disguise was just brilliant. He's the man!!!
About Nathan's fate... well. it seems we have to worry about him every Season Finale, and honestly... Im tired of it. I mean, of course I see where you guys are trying to go, and that's "5YG". I don't mind if you kill Nathan that way, but before we lose him, I'd like to see him with Heidi and the kids again ( just like you did with the Parkman family ) and I'd also like to see him as President before he's killed. And it would be nice to see him survive at least 1 Season Finale. Don't you think he can die in the next Volume? This will also allow you to take more time to develop all the plot lines if yo really want to turn tha whole Heroeverse into the "5YG" Universe.
The babies are soooo cute, and Ando's funny face just made laugh sooooo much, lol.

And say Happy Birthday to Christine Rose, 'cause she's just AAAWWWESOME and we all love her!!!
If the writers try to make Sylar/Claire canon, that would just be *beyond* illogical, for the characters and for the plot. I don't see it happening at all, unless if they go the rape route, and that would be a terrible idea. Trust me, Sylar/Claire is NOT happening, and never will.
i loved this episode!!! :D:D:D and as i've said before, i really enjoyed the last bunch of episodes too! Heroes is baaaack!!!!! :D:D:D congrats to the whole Heroes team!
sylar's new shapeshifting ability adds so much suspense and tension to the show for me, it's AWESOME!
to alex at 8:44 - it's true that sylar's intentions are very clear, but his new power opens up doors for so many new opportunities! the suspense and excitement for me is held in the fact that i do not know how he will approach each hero, which people he will use to get close to them. my imagination is running wild with possibilities, and i think that that is a fantastic thing. sylar can be a lot craftier and nastier now; after all, the bonds that you have with people close to you are the ones that destroy you the most when they appear to be severed - look at HRG! sylar can waltz right up to his enemies and they will likely welcome him with open arms...how creepy is that?!
i feel so bad for HRG! it was so hard to watch his world be ripped apart; sylar wasn't kidding when he said he was out to destroy him!
the scene where he was trying to explain himself to the real Sandra after sylar impersonated her was almost painful to watch, especially when the real sandra turned him away too.
another agonizing scene was the one where he tries to prove that the man he shot was sylar - and it was - but no one knew! AH!!! now because sylar was able to feign being dead for so long, his team has turned against him! everything he knows is being torn away from him...although his reaction to thinking that the man he shot wasn't really sylar and was actually dead (where he violently pushes someone away and bolts) didn't seem very characteristic of him, but i guess he had been desperate and that was his last straw.
it was SWEET when HRG pretended to be sylar being himself in order to get to Danko - genius! i never realized how the heroes could use sylar's new power to their own advantage until then, which adds another interesting twist to the show.
hiro and ando's scenes with baby matt were hilarious!!! the faces they were making just killed me! the twins are adorable too :) one of my favourite moments was when matt was holding up baby matt in wonder, and the toy cars on the ground began to race around them in circles. so cute! <3
matt was really pushed to his limit in this episode. i like how we are beginning to see how there is more to danko than just his bad-guy image. matt was right, sort of - the best way to get back at danko was to take away the one person he had in his life that he truly cared about.
i definitely think that matt's plan worked out for the best, better than he had even expected. not just because he didn't get shot: he had wanted danko to feel the pain he felt when Daphne was killed. however, at least he knew that Daphne still cared for him when she died. if matt had just killed danko's girlfriend, danko would have had this luxury as well. but now danko is in an even more painful situation: his girlfriend CHOSE to leave him, to take herself out of his life. that would really cut him deeply.
i think what i really loved about this episode is the fact that the heroes are coming back together, rather than fighting the unconnected battles that have plagued them for so long. they are finally joining together and working as a team! hiro and ando brought hope to matt by bringing him his son, and the petrellis are being brought together in order to learn the truth about angela and their own origins.
the interactions between the heroes are what draw me in, and it's great to see them with people other than the ones they have spent the last couple episodes with. the relationships between them are at the heart of what the show is, and why people enjoy immersing themselves in these characters' lives so much.
AAAH, WHY did you have do draw us in so much with the lure of finding out about angela's past and the origin of the heroes at the end of the episode, only for us to find out that this storyline will be explored next week?!? it made for a fantastic ending, but it's driving me crazy having to wait untill monday to see what happens! EEE so excited!!! :D:D:D
about Claire's expression - Claire has not seen her father for quite a while, and as a result i think it makes sense that her very first reaction to his sudden appearance would be surprise and confusion. if it is decided that she should be happier to see him, it will make sense in the next episode - the pleasure would shine through once she got over the initial surprise at his appearance.
thank you again, Mr. Beeman, for your detailed behind-the-scenes info. i love reading your blog and seeing the pictures!
i can't believe there are only three more episodes! i know they will be fantastic and look forward to watching them :)
And now after seeing some of the new promos I'm really hopeful for some new Milo/Adrian and Hayden/Zach pics for the next blog post - in the meantime I can't wait to see the ep!
