SEASON 2 EPISODE 2 - “LIZARDS”

WARNING – SOME SPOILERS ARE CONTAINED WITHIN

First of all, I’d like to thank all of you fans for watching last week. We producers only care about ratings in the same way that a gunfighter might care about the speed of his draw. Luckily HEROES ratings were excellent – and so, we live to fight another day!

Also thanks for buying the DVD and for all of your support in general.

As I hope you know, we here on the show really care about the fans. We try hard to put out a good product, and it takes the sweat and sleepless nights of a lot of talented people to do that. But, ultimately, you fans are the judge of how we’re doing – and you either watch the show, or not.

While episode 2 airs tonight, here, behind the scenes, I have seen cut versions through episode 7. I truly can say that I believe we are going to continue to deliver the goods. The stories come at you fast and furiously – the drama is dense – and you may have to rewind the Tivo a couple of times to breathe or catch up. But, then, it seems like you guys like the stories being told that way. In my opinion the writing, acting, directing and style continues at the same quality as last year.

“Lizards” is the second episode of our new season. It was written by Michael Green (who is also a co-executive producer) and directed by Allan Arkush (who is also an executive producer). I loved the script when I read it. The scene that stood out for me in particular was the final Claire scene – the toe-cutting scene. Eek! That is just creepy… and because it builds on the speech by Claire’s teacher about lizards regenerating… you kind of know what she’s going to do before she does it, but you still can’t believe she’s going to.

THE EVER MYSTERIOUS MICHAEL GREEN

ALLAN ARKUSH LINES UP A SHOT WITH CAMERA OPERATOR SCOTT STEELE

Interestingly, the scripted version of that scene was that Claire’s toe didn’t re-grow. She sat there looking at it, going “grow grow” then, in desperation, she picked up the severed toe and held it up to the stump – and the stump and toe reattached. I actually think that version, intellectually, was cooler. But in post, it took a lot longer, in an episode that was already long and the visual was actually a little unclear. So we decided to go with the regenerating stump.

As I mentioned last week, I think Allan did a particularly good job with the Japanese section of the episode. Allan is a huge film buff in general, and he really understands Japanese cinema. Before we begin shooting we spend a long time having theoretical conversations about the episode. In fact, the day before shooting, the director, writer, producers and Tim Kring have a “tone” meeting in which everyone discusses how we think the show should be shot, what moments need to be emphasized, and how both technically and practically we’re going to produce the scenes. In this meeting we talked about shooting the feudal Japan sequences in a Japanese style. I was less familiar with this cinema style than others. In watching many Japanese films, I noticed that there was typically less coverage (shots) than in American movies. There were fewer close-ups, and the action plays out in highly designed, highly composed masters (wide shots). I attempted this style on my episode, but found it elusive to successfully accomplish. When I saw Allan’s episode, I realized it wasn’t only a style of composition that had escaped me… It was a style of performance. The Japanese sections in this episode are acted in a slightly more theatrical style. Not so much from Masi and David Anders, but Eriko Tamura, the sword smith’s daughter, and Whitebeard and his gang all act in a slightly stylized way which Allan guided them into.

A sequence I particularly like is the one where the sword smith’s daughter is fighting eleven bad guys, then Hiro appears pretending to be Kensei. I love the way each shot flows into the others. The compositions are very designed (note the way Allan stacks several swordsman in profile with their swords drawn – very Japanese). It’s all very good fun.

ALLAN ARKUSH, MASI OKA AND ERIKO TAMURA

I also dig the new darker direction Greg Grunberg's character is going in – I love him in the scene where he grills Angela Petrelli. I also really like the scene where Angela Petrelli is being attacked by…. who??? There is a great shot in this sequence where we see a full-frame shot of Angela cringing in terror, and then that image breaks into a hundred pieces revealing Grunberg and Adrian Pasdar – and we realize the original image was in the mirror. I at first thought that this shot was filmed into the mirror… But then I learned that the editor, Donn Aron, had created the shot by laying the image of Angela over the shot of the mirror. A frame before the mirror explodes he removes the Angela image, and the shot is seamless – A tip o’ the hat to Donn Aron.

I’d also like to introduce a new cinematographer to the show. His name is Charlie Lieberman and he will be alternating episodes with last year’s d.p. Nate Goodman. Because of the scope of our episodes, we need two directors of photography who can alternate each week (this way they can prep with the director and shoot for all of the higher-than-average-TV-schedule days). Charlie’s reel was absolutely gorgeous. I particularly loved his work on JOAN OF ARCADIA, the first season of EVERWOOD and ONCE AND AGAIN. His lighting is strong, naturalistic but still stylized. Heightened reality is what I like to call it. When I made calls around town everyone who had worked with him spoke exceedingly highly of him, explaining that he was also very fast (which is amazing considering the quality of work he does). Charlie was hired and is proving an excellent addition to the team.

D.P’S CHARLIE LIEBERMAN AND NATE GOODMAN

CHARLIE ON SET IN DISCUSSION WITH TIM KRING

I’d also like to tip my hat to production designer Ruth Ammon. I’ve praised her work many times before – but the Irish bar set she created is amazing. When you’re on this set you really forget you’re on a set on a stage. It really looks and feels like an Irish bar with a thick deep coat of varnished paint… Beautiful.

Finally, this week I’d like to tip my hat to our casting directors, Natalie Hart and Jason La Padura and their associate casting director Keri Owens. This group is critically responsible for all of our cast – from the series regulars down to the cops and nurses who say one line. The final decisions of each major cast member is made by a large pool of executive producers and studio executives, with much debate and fighting along the way… But the core ideas of what actors we should be considering always come from them. (Interesting factoid: Besides casting the amazing HEROES cast, one of their other recent credits is HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL – meaning they discovered many of those teen stars too!)

Season 2 posed a particularly challenging task for Natalie and Jason. This is because we added several major new characters to the cast and they were all characters that would play in multiple episodes. ... Kensei and Yaeko in the feudal Japan sequence, Maya and Alejandro for the South American sequence, Bob, the company man who’s been following Suresh, West, the new man in Claire’s life, and Monica Dawson and her family (who haven’t been introduced yet).

How this works is that we in production get a script, hot off the press (in this case we got scripts for episodes 1 and 2 more or less at the same time.) There were loads of new characters that are all described in a general way - and those descriptions are highly subject to interpretation. For instance “Bob” appears in episode 1, and the writers inform us that he is a very important character who will play for many episodes.

So, who is Bob? The script first describes him as this: “A genial looking MAN in a rumpled white linen suit, no tie, stands watching intently. ….We will heretofor refer to this man as BOB.” His behavior and dialogue gives you some insight into the character – and Tim Kring said he really wanted someone who was inherently unthreatening and felt middle management. But there was also a need, down the road, for the character to have menace. There were some who wanted a more edgy take on the character. There were some who wanted him to be smooth and mysterious. Some even suggested Bob could be a woman. In the end we read all of these types for Bob. I’m note sure how many actors the casting directors saw, but we producers saw twenty or thirty. We ended up with the versatile, and often seen, character actor Stephen Tobolowsky, who clearly embodies what Tim first had in mind. (He can veer from shlubby/nice to creepy/menace on a dime). But, the point is, this process had to be repeated by the casting directors for every character down to the smallest.

CASTING DIRECTORS NATALIE HART AND JASON LA PADURA AND ASSOCIATE CASTING DIRECTOR KERRI OWENS

That’s it for now, next week, Peter makes a fateful choice with the Irish gang, Maya and Alejandro encounter trouble with the law, Claire and West take it to a higher level and an old friend returns!!!

Onward!

THAT was a kick ass episode! It made me giddy just watching it again. I love the part where Mrs. Petrelli screamed "Get out of my head!" to Parkman, that was awesome. There were a lot of great scenes in the episode, I can't wait for next week!

I'm disappointed that you guys seem to relegate Nathan's story to the background. I was hoping to see him in action and only got no less than 2 minutes of screen time of him. To make matter worse, he has to share his ability with that annoying brat, West.

I think the series have added way too many new characters. They take a lot of screen time which the original characters should have received. It's annoying that we have to wait for ages for characters like Sylar to even show up on screen.

You guys better have a pretty good explanation of why you're repeating abilities =`( Well I guess you probably already do since you're episodes ahead, but really... and I hope Kensei's powers are less developed then Claire's because she's supposed to be a *new* evolutionary form of the Human Being, so by giving Kensei the same gift kind of ruins it a little =(

Anyway, I should be sending these thoughts to the writers and not harassing you in your most excellent blog. I'm sure something will work out and I'll snap out of worrying. Thanks for the inside scoop. I really appreciate it (although I may just seem like a grump right now).

"You guys better have a pretty good explanation of why you're repeating abilities"

Are you kidding me?

They shouldn't have to explain jack to you.

It should have been obvious from the beginning that not everybody in the world is going to develop differently.

Evolution is something a species experiences together, not as individuals.

All this and not even to mention there are certain sets of rules that apply to the powers in Heroes, realism to be specific.

There is already a thin pool to begin with, duplicate powers were always an inevitability.

Great episode as always. And Yes! that toe-cutting scene is creepy as hell. Still way f'in cool though. Keep up the great work and can't wait until next weeks blog. Thanks.

I felt as though I was in a theater watching the most beautifully done Japanese film. Thank you!
This episode was exciting, gripping, sexy, thought provoking and just plain fun. Thanks..I just love Heroes! Sheindie

Old habits die hard:

The series are based heavily on the comic book environment and culture. Which means that it borrows some re-used story plots to try to keep the audience guessing about the fate of the heroes. For example, the hero with amnesia that has to do something that he/she is against in order to regain his/her memory.

I mean, the scene where (can't remember her name)the Irish girl is tending to Peter's injuries was a scene where she's the only one shocked. AS an audience, we know that he can and will regenerate, we know that he will be surprised, we know that she will be surprised. Why do it, if the audience knows.

Peter is such an interesting character, and what's going on so far in the story is just annoying to watch because there has been no surprise element for the audience. After 2 hours the only new thing we know about Peter is that he absorbed DL's powers, he's in Ireland and he is confused ...again .

If you already had build momentum with the Heroes, why does it feel like you are introducing them again . Who are you introducing this characters to?, another characters?.

The first season really picked up in the last 10 episodes, so why stop what you build in all that time.

Instead of resolving one of the main questions, what happened to Sylar,Peter and Nathan, the writers chose to start from the beginning. You already have an audience of millions of people, why?, why?, waste everybody's time by not resolving the questions that the writers created at the end of the first season.

It's starting to feel like the writers had to prolong the story as much as they could in order to keep the audience watching (not happily).

I sincerely hope that the story picks up again.

If you're going to use elements of comic books, at least, use them creatively. There's nothing new under sun (or eclipse in this time).

Say whatever u want, this was a extremely great episode, i just love every part!!!.
Claire´s toe scene was great!!
Just one thing, please!!! don´t kill Mamma Petrelli!! I love that woman!!!

Hi Greg, I just have one question: when will the Petrelli brothers be reunited? I miss seeing the two together.

Peter gets a lot of focus in this episode but his story is a bit boring. In reverse, Nathan's story is interesting but he doesn't get enough screen time. If you combine the two, we could have got interesting storyline/decent screen time for both brothers.

i couldn't help laughing at the part where angela shouts at parkman in her mind. awesome!

the maya/alejandro segment is really interesting too. I think one of the main attractions of Heroes is the sheer cultural diversity. It reminds me of the old Tintin comics i used to read, actually, where he goes all around the world in his adventures.

I think people are just being nitpicky by complaining since there aren't any glaring flaws or plot holes with Heroes. Still my favourite show to date.

While the Edo Japan scenes were all really beautiful, the last scene with Claire's advanced pedicure was my favorite of the evening. I sat there thinking to myself that what you said was the original script idea was going to happen, so I was shocked when she did completely regenerate. I guess that leaves room for cool things happening to her and her limbs in teh near future, but I was kind of hoping she'd have that moment of panic and "oh crap what did I just do?!" Even if she healed over and couldn't put the toe back. But I guess that wouldn't be as fun for the future. Then again, there would have been more at stake for her going into the fray of battle. Hrm.
Anyway. Another pleased fan says thanks for a great show. I like the story-building shows just as much if not more than the shows that have big culminations. The suspence is the fun part, no?

Well, Mr. Beeman, I suppose you can't make everyone happy 100% of the time. There will always be people who come on here to whinge and nitpick about every little thing.

I say give it time. Given this wasn't one of my favourite episodes, I think that you all are doing a good job of introducing us to new characters. As far as showing Peter's abilities goes, while we know what abilities he has, the other characters do not -- hence why showing his abilities is appropriate.

I loved the scene with Angela getting attacked. Not because I hate the character, but because I love Christine Rose -- she is such an incredible actress, and did a wonderful job of finally showing Angela's facade cracking just a bit.

Kudos to you!

This episode's plus and minus:

+ Angela's story. In fact, the entire older generation story and their murderer is the highlight of season 2 that other stories feel like distractions.
+ Hiro/Kensei/Yaeko in Japan. It was a bit long but it was entertaining. And the 3 actors have good chemistry together.
+/- Maya and Alejandro have potential but that black oil thing should have happened last week to save time.
- Peter having to relearn all of his power. We already saw this last years. Why repeat it again in S2? The fake Irish folks don't make things better either.
- Nathan not getting any story apart from a very brief appearance. I just hope that when he does get a story, it's something lame/similar to Niki/Jessica story last season.
- Claire/West were mundane and boring (losing car/wanting to be special/cutting toe/stalking). West is a creep too.

Beeman, you really ought to do a commentary one of these days. I just watched the Arkush commentary, and for some reason, his disucssion of the technical work was...boring. On the contrary, you present it in an engaging matter.

As for the episode itself, it was well paced, but some things need to be cleared up for the ADD-inflicted fans.

I enjoyed how much fun Hiro seemed to be having pretending to be Kensai and I felt a little sorry for him during the scene with the swordsmith's daughter in the cherry tree grove.

I really didn't have a problem with Kensai having the same abilities as Claire...after all, Claude (the Invisible man) said "Great, another Empath" when he first met Peter, so it would seem that there have been others with the same power as Peter before.

Speaking of Peter, I think he needs to market the "missing for four months and locked in a cargo container" diet/workout plan...he looks a great deal more cut than he did at the end of Season 1.

I have to wonder what happened to Claire's little toe since she grew a new one...did Mr. Muggles get an extra snack?

I'm looking forward to seeing more with Nathan and hopefully getting some insight into the situation with Molly. I also wonder if there'll be an episode that backfills the missing four months.

I only have one disappointment about the first two episodes. The use of subtitles is starting to become a chore instead of a cute thing to do with Hiro. His lines have been fun to read and the number of subtitled not a problem. With the other story line and the number of lines to read, it is becoming annoying for me. I know of one other that shares this view.

I like Kensei and Claire, and Nathan and West, share their skills. And I liked to see again the haitian.

About Kensei and evolution (civilian's comment) I'd bet he's also able to travel time... we'll see...

Bravo Peter Petrelli! But I think we're wasting some precious time by waiting for him to re-discover his skills... And I'm willing to know what happened to Nathan...

I don't like Maya and Alejandro. Let's see where it ends up, but at the moment, they don't convince to me.

Finally, I hope Hiro comes back soon with Ando. It would be great taking Kensei with him to the future!!

Hey Greg,

Thanks for your blog, man. I really enjoy the fact that you give us such an inside look into the way you shoot the show. It's very unusual to have this kind of casual access to the mind of the producer/director for a show of this level.

Dear Greg,
I love your blog, it's such a great insight into the behind the scenes details of the show. I think, though, that I have to stop reading the comments from other readers, haha. I for one absolutely LOVE the Peter story-line because we get to rediscover his powers with him all over again. The amazement that dawns over his face is priceless, and something I feel like we'll never see again once he recovers his identity. Amazement and discovery are what Heroes is all about in my mind, and Peter's self-discovery was one of my favorite stories from last season. Plus, I think it's great build-up for when he's finally reunited with everyone back in the States.

Another thing I loved about this episode is that Hiro is actually Takezo Kensei! All the stories are about his own deeds--HE made the legend what it is! Or at least, he got it rolling. Absolutely great television!

Hi Greg! Thanks for (a) another kickass episode, and (b) another entertaining and informative blog entry.

I actually loved Peter's storyline this episode. Er...not just the shirtlessness (though that's always a plus), but also him rediscovering his identity. "My name is Peter?" Awesome.

Greg, I know you have the utmost respect for you casting directors but for God's sake could you ask them to cast Irish people to play Irish people? I find it hard to believe that not one Irish person was good enough to land one of these roles. I'm sick of American shows deciding to have Irish characters and then using stereotypical accents, settings and dialogue. Which brings me to my next point. The dialogue of these characters is terrible, we don't speak like that. Have any of the writers ever been to Ireland or watch any Irish movies?

Other than that I enjoyed the episode!

The lack of focus on Nathan makes me sad. I really wish you guys have gone ahead with the original plan of making Nathan stranded somewhere else with no one to contact (it was mentioned in one of the magazine interviews) just like Peter. Also, everyone else seems to get an expansion of their power or get an insane amount of power within themselves. Why can't Nathan be given the same treatment?
jraimo said…
And another thing...to 'Hello' who requested Greg not talk about how much he loves everyone and tell us more about scene choices and such...that's pretty demanding to ask of someone who doesn't even have to do this blog. He's a little busy. Ok I'm done...for now.

"The lack of focus on Nathan makes me sad. I really wish you guys have gone ahead with the original plan of making Nathan stranded somewhere else with no one to contact"

That wasn't literal. He's still in New York city he's just in a differnt "place" Think about it. "can't pick up a phone and get done what he wants to the way he could."

I like everything that's going on so far because it's starting to broaden the scope of the show to the world instead of mostly in the U.S. The introduction of Maya and Alejandro is just fantastic and you really start to feel for them and their hardships to get to a place that can answer their questions. I suspect a very good story to come of their meeting with Dr. Suresh.

Nathan should get some more spotlight, though. When he eventually does, I can't wait to see what you do with this broken man. :)

Also, I'd just like to say that repeat abilities is normal. It's been said that species evolve in groups, not just individuals. It takes two chickens to make an egg, but who's to say the first set of chickens didn't come from some beast and some strange bird? Repeat abilities show group progression!

I for one loved the episode. It was great to see the Haitian meeting up with HRG again, great to see Peter start to control his powers, great to see Claire stand up for who she is, and great to watch the comedy duo of Kensei and Hiro. Awesome.

>> That wasn't literal. He's still in New York city he's just in a differnt "place" Think about it. "can't pick up a phone and get done what he wants to the way he could."

Nathan can clearly pick up the phone back in episode 1 and he even knew right away that it's Claire who called him. I think I know what the other poster is talking about. The situation was also described by the press back at the end of S2 was completely different (I think I remember one member of the press inquiring about this as well during the Heroes World Tour press conference). Here's the quote: "I know there is some talk of Nathan being separated from his traditional environment next season. What will that do to Nathan, when he can't just pick up the phone and call someone for help or get what he wants?"

I understand that the writers probably want to change the plot so that it's not obvious to the viewers (although it's not really necessary IMO since viewers who want to find out about the plot in advance would have found out about it anyway and those who wish to remain unspoil would stay that way). At any rate, I agree that the change is too drastic and make it seem like Nathan has been put on the backburner. Even Claire has more screen time and her plot mostly deals with mundane everyday life like losing her car and being stalked by her potential boyfriend.

And how about other characters like Niki and Sylar? It's really unfair to their fans that someone like Hiro and Claire got copious amount of screen time while these two have to wait until 3 episodes to even show up. I don't think I remember the time when Hiro or Claire don't show up at all in one episode while every other characters have at one point or another been back-benched by the writers.

I love the murder mystery involving the elder Heroes. It's probably the best storyline the series got so far.

Not as good but still better than the rest is the Hiro in the past. The pacing on this one is so slow though.

Peter's story in Ireland is boring. Peter as a character also becomes increasingly problematic. He's too strong as a hero. I mean, no villain can stand against him not with the amount of power that he has.

In reverse, he's also too strong as a villain since the other characters don't have as much power as him. Something needs to be done about his power (or the other character's power) so that it's far more balanced. Otherwise Peter will become this show's Deus ex machina.
Lizards was great. I really enjoyed learning more about the nature of Claire's powers, plus the unfolding Hiro/Kensei story has me on the edge of my seat.

The season is getting better by the minute! Gotta say I love this blog, I am very into the camera angle, technical, production, and directional insight.

My favorite scene from this episode was the Hatian wiping Mohinder's memory, and Mohinder experiencing it. At the time, I was like "cool," and then I watched the commentary on NBC, and it was actually cooler when they described how they did it!

I'm sure the cast and crew will keep up the amazing work, and I wish I could work on this show!

The idea that someone would get upset for anything being repeated is stupid. This is one of the best written, most exciting shows on television. The writers have reasons for everything, and to cut them down in anyway is retarded. I believe that what ever they come up with goes, as it is THEIR creation, not ours. Not ours to judge, not ours to be disappointed. I feel that you either love it or you don't and to not like it, is foolhardy, since it is the most brilliant, exciting show to hit TV since Lost! Only better. So please, why put any negaviity on your comments? Why be disappointed? Would you all rather not have the show at all? Because that is what you're doing by saying bad things. And I truly feel there isn't ONE THING "bad" or "wrong" with this awesome, perfect show!!!!!

Adding a second language that has to be captioned is a really bad idea. Too much reading spoils the episode, expecially since the captions flash by so fast.
Anonymous said…
A lot of people have said to me that they don't like reading an epsiode. . . Personally I watch with the subtitles on so I don't miss a single word, but most people cannot stand reading a TV show.

So... Here is a tip: Don't put any scenes with Hiro speaking any Japanese (Or Ando for that matter) in the same episode as the Twin story arch.

It's starting to annoy people.

But other than that: Great job on Season 2!

It's been a bit slow of a start. Not excellent, but not bad.

I'm a true fan, and I will continue to watch episodes on-line (no working TV in the house, currently) until the Season 2 finale. After that if I feel like Heroes has gone the way of the T-Rex, I'll give up on the show, but until then: I'll be watching.

Other Fans: Give Season 2 until the finale! If you cannot stand the show --- then stop watching. Don't let it die, because you didn't like some detail of the first couple of epsiodes. Heroes has been too good of a show for it to end based on something so mundane...

I don't like the twins, the irish story is boring and Peter is too strong now.

The first season was about the relationship between the characters and how they deal with their abilities in their daily lives, that's why I loved it so much...

I'm a little disappointed but the show is still very entertaining.
